Men's Tennis vs. Eastern Michigan Sunday, 1:00 p.m. Huron Valley Tennis Club SPORTS Women's Tennis vs. Miami of Ohio Friday, 7:30 p.m. Huron Valley Tennis Club The Michigan Daily Wednesday, March 27, 1985 Page 7 Batsmen bust rand alley in opener By BRAD MORGAN It wasn't Texas and it wasn't 80 degrees, but the change in scenery didn't seem to hurt the baseball team a bit yesterday. Strong pitching and decent hitting allowed Michigan to waltz through a doubleheader with Grand Valley at Ray Fisher Stadium. The Wolverines picked up 5-3 and 7- victories to run their record to 11-0. Head coach Bud Middaugh used the twinbill as an opportunity to continue testing his younger players and juggling his lineup, as 25 Wolverines saw action, including five pitchers in the second game. "We used an awful lot of people, and I .. want to continue to give as much ex- perience to the younger players as I can x right now," explained Middaugh. IN THE FIRST game, sophomore ';. Dave Karasinski made his second start of the year and picked up his second win. Laker Greg Suhajda tagged Karasinski for his fourth home run of the year in the first inning, but that was the only hit the left hander yielded in his three inning stint. Grand Valley's lead was then erased f in Michigan's half of the first when Ed- die Woolwine led off with a single, and after Barry Larkin walked and 'Ken Hayward dribbled an infield hit to short, scored when Casey Close lofted a short fly to center. Larkin went to third on the same play, but the Wolverine rally was cut short when Larkin was caught at the plate in an attempted double steal to end the inning. Michigan scored all the runs they would need in the second inning. After Dan Disher flied out, Matt Siuda reached on an error and went to third on a perfect hit-and-run single by second baseman C.J. Beshke. SIUDA SCORED on a Randy Wolfe, bounce out, Woolwine walked, and he and Beshke pulled off a double steal to set up Chris Gust's two RBI single. Gust was out trying for second. Freshman Jim Agemy came on to pitch for Michigan in the fourth and proved to be a little nervous in his home debut. Agemy gave up lone runs in the fourth and sixth, and had to be bailed out in that sicth inning when he loaded the bases and walked a run in. Greg Everson came on in relief and escaped further trouble to earn his first save of the season. "He was in front of the home crowd, and he was just overthrowing," said Middaugh of Agemy. "He might have just tightened up in the wind, but he was throwing with better velocity than down South." THE AFTERNOON'S second game was over nearly before it started. low Siuda then drilled the game's big hit when his single ended up clearing the once-again full bases.. Dan Disher scored all the way from first when the Lakers tried to get Siuda going to second and Disher beat the relay to the plate. Casey Close and Jeff Minick scored in front of Disher. Michigan later added single runs in the second and sixth innings on RBI singles by Beshke and Barry Larkin. WATTERS finished his perfect after- noon by scoring three runs and adding two singles and a triple to his leadoff double. Starting pitcher Paul Kasper led a strong parade of pitchers to the mound for Michigan. The sophomore allowed only three hits in four innings while striking out three and walking none. Hayward followed in the fifth, sophomore John Grettenburger in the sixth, and Paul Wenson and Kevin Gilles closed in the seventh. Wenson lost the shutout when Rob Brunelle touched him for his first home run of the year'leading off the final inning. Middaugh was reservedly pleased with today's victories. "I was happy with the results, but we didn't really play as well and swing the bats as well as I would have hoped. We've just got to continue to play'well and to play good D," said the sixth-year head man. SSiuda ... two-RBI single Michigan exploded for five runs in the first inning, three of them unearned, as two Grand Valley errors opened the flood gates. Mike Watters began a perfect four- for-four afternoon by doubling to the rightfield wall. Kurt Zimmerman singled, and Barry Larkin walked to load the bases. Hayward drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, and suc- cessive errors by the third baseman and first baseman allowed another run to score. Ogodnick, Red Wings topple Minnesota DETROIT (AP) - John Ogrodnick scored his team record-setting 53rd and 54th goals 1:43 apart early in the final period last night to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 National Hockey League victory over the Minnesota North Stars. The triumph lifted Detroit one point ahead of Minnesota into third place in the Norris Division. OGRODNICK, who has led the Red Wings in goals in each of his five full seasons, took Ron Duguay's pass bet- ween the face-off circles and beat North Star's netminder Roland Melanson with a slapshot at 2:36 to snap a 1-1 tie. The all-star leftwing was credited with his 54th goal moments later when his pass intended for Duguay glanced off Minnesota defenseman Dave Richter and slid past Melanson. Ogrodnick broke the previous club mark for goals in a season, 52, set by Mickey Redmond in 1972-73. BOB MANNO added a breakaway marker at 5:00 to cap the three-goal-in 2:24 span and give Detroit a comman- ding 4-1 margin. Darryl Sittler added his 11th goal for Detroit with one second remaining in the game. >r earyivak-adc :tav. ..:s , ...... .......s a>v..__............---...._.................__..._..>.................. ..... .... ......,..
