4 Men's Swimming Wolverine Invitational Today Matt Mann Pool SPORTS Basketball vs. Villanova NCAA Tournament Sunday, March 17, 12:11 p.m. University of Dayton Arena The Michigan Daily Saturday, March 16, 1985 Page 7 Ne tters nip Hurons, 5-4 By DEBBIE deFRANCES The Women's Tennis team squeezed by Eastern Michigan University to win a close team match 5-4 yesterday at the Track and Tennis Building. The Wolverines, who shut out Calvin College last week 9-0 to open their spring season increased their overall record to 3-1. Michigan was even after the singles competition, winning three matches and losing three. The Wolverines were paced by Junior Paula Reichert's easy 6-2, 6-1 victory in the top singles contest. As a sophomore, Reichert was selected to the All-Big Ten team and should be a prime candidate again this year accor- ding to rookie coach Bitsy Ritt. OTHER singles victories include Monica Borcherts at fourth singles with a three-set win over EMU's Amy Zeilinger 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, and sophomore Tricia Horn's 6-3, 6-1 fifth position vic- toty. While the Wolverines scored im- pressive victories among the upper classmen singles players, the three freshmen struggled in their singles' ef- forts and all lost in their second spring appearance. Coach Ritt, who comes to Michigan after a two year stint as assistant coach of Wisconsin, said the freshmen's losses were due to inex- perience and nerves. "When they (the freshmen) start playing with confidence then they'll develop into good players," said Ritt, who is often seen stepping out onto the court to talk to her players. "I go over and tell them what they need to do. I have to get them psyched up." She en- courages them by slapping her thigh in imitation of Jimmy Connors, who pounds his thigh with his palm when he's pumped up. WITH TWO victories in the three doubles matches, the Wolverines secured a team triumph by winning five of nine individual contests. Paula Reichert and freshman Leslie Mackey teamed for first doubles and lost a long, exciting three-set match 6-4, 6-7 (7-5 in tie breaker) 7-5. Monica Borcierts and Tricia Horn won second doubles 6-3, 7-6. (8-6 in tiebreaker) while Tina Basle and Erin Ashare coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 third doubles victory. Early in the spring season, Michigan is right where Ritt expected them to be. "We went to Orlando (Florida) for spring break and didn't get much com- petition from Florida schools," said Ritt referring to her team's one match against Indian River. "But,we did get the outside practice for four or five hours a day; that helps a lot." One unexpected player in Michigan's top six is sophomore Tricia Horn, ac- cording to Ritt. "Tricia is a pleasant surprise. She's a nice girl and a hard worker and it's paid off for her." Horn won both her matches yesterday. Looking to the future, Ritt thinks if her team plays up to their potential, they can finish third in the Big Ten, a feat comparable to their last year's finish. Ritt also said that top Big Ten honors will probably go to Indiana and Northwestern and third place is up for grabs. "After' the first two teams, I think anybody can beat anybody on any given day," said Ritt.
