ONE SMALL VOICE By Jeff Bergida FDU, Vdlanova and the Terps.. . you don't have to read it T HE ONLY THING worse than a sportswriter doing a column on why an event means something to him personally is an amateur sportswriter doing the same thing. Sorry. It just happened to work out that three teams in Michigan's half of the Southeast region, Fairleigh Dickinson, Villanova, and Maryland, represent something more to me than just another opponent. Three stories out of half a bracket, it must be fate. The Wolverines' first opponent, Fairleigh Dickinson, is a non-descript school located right off Route 4 in Northern New Jersey. It is nestled snugly between Teaneck and Hackensack (a town who's major claim to fame is that it rhymes with heart attack-ack-ack-ack-ack in a Billy Joel song). Anyway, for the last three summers, I've worked in those two cities and have managed to learn a lot about this place that doesn't have a lot going for it. FDU, also known as "Fairly Ridiculous," has a reputation as a place to go when you really don't want to go to college but your parents make you. School spirit is thus somewhat lacking and even a nationally-ranked soccer team couldn't draw any fans. The goal of most FDU students is to get a diploma and settle down to raise a family in Jersey City or Paterson. So I thought it was pretty hilarious when I heard that Michigan would be playing the Knights in its opening round clash. Knowing how people from the Garden State are, I can't wait to interview one of their players. "What did you think of Michigan, Phil?" "Yo, I can't talk. We've got to fly home for the bowling league." If the Wolverines play Villanova in the second round, it'll make me look like a genius. Back in November, I wrote a column forecasting, org a game- by-game basis, what would happen to Bill Frieder's club this year. I had them going 24-4, second to Illinois in the Big Ten. Not bad. But what's truly amazing was that the column had Michigan playing Villanova in the second round of the NCAAs at Dayton. There are 288 Division I basketball teams and eight early-round tour- nament sites. Do you have any idea what the odds are against correctly predicting who's going to play whom and where? Maybe I'm clairvoyant. The National Star might hire me and I could make a lot of money being a sleazy journalist. Finally, the Terrapins of the University of Maryland are special to me because my younger brother, Steve, is a junior at the College Park school. I've adopted "the other U of M" as my second favorite college team in both football and basketball. The Wolverines will battle the Terps on the gridiron this fall in Ann Arbor. But my interest in that sport has waned with the demise of the Michigan program. Hoops is the driving force on this campus today and the only way Michigan could play Maryland in that sport is in the tourney. Well, they're on a collision course to meet in the third round in Bir- mingham. Steve has been telling me all season about "those awesome Ter- ps" and how easily they could handle Michigan. But he's slightly partial. Maryland has had some big wins this season (Duke, Iowa, Ohio State and N.C. State twice) but Roy Tarpley would eat up 6-7 Terrapin center Derrick Lewis. They've got a great small forward in Len Bias but are lacking Michigan's overall balance. It would be fun though. I've never seen Maryland play in person and it can be an explosive team. Bias against Rich Rellford would be a great match-up, as would high-scoring Adrian Branch versus Gary Grant. Steve got all the talent in the family. It's time for revenge.
