The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 15, 1985- Page 3 Panel opposes sorority's addition BySiJSAN GRANT The Ann Arbor Historic District Commission voted 5-1 last night to deny the Collegiate Sorosis Sorority's request to build an addition to a house on 903 Lincoln. While the commission agreed that the architectural design is in keeping with the character of the existing house, the long-range affects on the neighborhood should be considered, members said. "IF WE change the house to the sorority's needs, I'm concerned that people bringing in a family will not buy a house in that neighborhood," said Commission Member Allen Meiselbach. Adrienne Malley, a commission member, said bringing 40 people into the neighborhood "will change the balance of the neighborhood." The commission voted on the proposal because the house is part of a proposed historical district. ON WEDNESDAY morning, the city's Planning Commission voted 5-2 in favor of the sorority's request to add 4,440-feet onto an existing building. The sorority's request will go before City Council on March 25. Council will take into consideration the Historic District Commission and Planning Commission and the zoning com- mission votes in reaching the final decision, which will determine the fate of the addition. AT THE Planning Commission meeting, area residents said there are other problems with the addition. They said the addition will double the size of the existing house. "It's strange that preserving the structure means adding more than twice the size of the original building," said neighbor Andrea Van Houweling. A city zoning law says that a house measuring less than 5000 feet can not be expanded and used for group housing. Although the Planning Commission measured the house at 6000 feet, neigh- bors say that city records show the house to be only 3100 feet. Area residents were also concerned Correction Lowell Peterson is the incumbent candidate for the First Ward seat on City Council. He was incorrectly iden- tified in yesterday's Daily as the Second Ward representative. DLOOM COUNTY IH NA.. 0 pill* Watch for it in about noise levels. "We have been awakened in the night. Who's going to make them stop partying with each other?" resident Mary Gibbard asked. Currently, the sorority is renting the Alpha Epsilon Pi house at 1620 Cam- bridge. However, the fraternity wants the house back in September.
