Page 8 - The Michigan Daily Thursday, March 7, 1985 Wolverines bust Bucks for 15th straight Blue withstands Ohio State rally as Joubert seals win Joubert went to the charity stripe and converted the freebies. Ohi State could get no closer, Joubert's fifth and sixth "ree throws iced the victory with 15 seconds left in the contest. "I did not enjoy that game much," said Buckeye coach Eldon Mller. "It's amazing to me that we were as close as we were, getting outrebounded by 17 (actually 15). This was not a strong ef- fort by our team." Both teams began the game in classic Michigan-Ohio State fashion, playing physically and yielding little ground. The Buckeyes with the help of Con- check's ten rebounds in the first stanza, built a lead of four points several times, only to have Michigan scrub and claw right back. In all, the lead changed hands five times the first 12 minutes before the Wolverines pulled away to an eight point lead, 34-26, with 2:42 left in the half. (Continued from Page 1) minutes remaining. From then on in, the contest was nip and tuck down to the wire. Frieder said "It was kinda like the game in Ann Arbor (in which Ohio State also came back). We just had problems containing their guards. "THEY're just so quick and so good, they brought the Buckeyes back into the game." The Wolverines got a crucial break when 7-0 Buckeye center Brad Sellers fouled out with 3:23 left. Michigan dominated under the boards all evening, outrebounding Ohio State 46-31 in the contest, and then capitalized even more with Sellers confined to the bench. Robert Henderson missed the front end of a one-and-one try but was able to nab his own rebound and sink a big dunk to maintain a 6-point Wolverine lead.' Again, however, Michigan relaxed and Ohio State made things tight. Buckeye forward Joe Concheck laid in a basket with under a minute left to pull Ohio State within five points, and then helped to bottle up Tarpley, who subsequently travelled to turn the ball over to Ohio State. Dennis Hopson's stuff with 42 seconds remaining cut the difference to three, 71-68. DAVE JONES of Ohio State then fouled Joubert to force the first of three one-and-one situations for the sophomore from Detroit. With the sell- out St. John's crowd yelling and on its feet, Joubert swiftly canned the pair of free throws. The diminutive Stokes, who led the Buckeyes with 18 points, managed to slither in for another lay-up, and the score became 73-70. Again, however, Don't 'ya love it? Dutcher: Knight suspension is lenient MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Univer- sity of Minnesota's Jim Dutcher says he or any other Big Ten basketball coach would have been punished severely for throwing a chair during .a game, an of- fense for which Indiana's Bob Knight was given a one-game suspension., While he did not want to come right out and criticize the penalty, Dutcher, when asked what he thought the penalty might have been had he thrown the chair, responded: "Probably life." "WHAT I don't understand is why Big Ten officials waited until the second game after the incident. The timing was a little strange," Dutcher said. Knight threw the chair during a loss to Purdue Feb. 23. He was allowed to coach against Minnesota Feb. 28 and guided his team 4 to a victory over Dutcher's Gophers. The next day, Big Ten Commissioner Wayne Duke announced the suspension and Knight sat out a March 2 loss to Iowa. Still, Dutcher felt the conference may have gotten a message across to Knight. "I think the thing that has been done now is that he is on warning and that they don't want any repeats," Dutcher said. BIG MARKET 341 E.
