MILLER The women's gymnastics team failed to reach its goal for' last weekend as they registered their third highest away score for the season. The tumblers would have moved closer to an NCAA regional birth if the team had scored higher than its top two away scores. The Wolverines finished third in the Wisconsin Invitational with a 174.75. Minnesota took first place with a 176.7, Wiscon- sin was second with 176.15, Iowa (172.6) was fourth, and Iowa State (168.85) was fifth. ANGELA Williams turned in a sterling performance taking second place in the all-around with a 35.95. She also finished first on the vault with a 9.35, third on the balance beam with a 8.9, and third in the floor exercise with a 9.3. "Angela had a pulled shoulder muscle that caused her to take it easy in practice last week," said Michigan coach Dana Kempthorn. "She had a great meet considering her in- jury." The tumblers' next meet is at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and it may provide the chance to achieve a new high road score. "The teams in the West seem to score higher than teams in this area, because of the different judging," com- mented Kempthorn. "That could be a big advantage for us." 9:07 remaining in the final period on two free throws by reserve guard Brooke Steppe. Reserve guard Tony Campbell hit 11 of his season-high 16 points in the first half. Guard John Long also had 16, while Tyler and Vinnie Johnson had 13 and Kent Benson 12. Guard Walter Davis scored 21 points to lead the Suns, who pulled no closer than 16 points, 114-98, on Davis' jumper with about two minutes left in the contest. Forward Maurice Lucas added 18 points off the bench for Phoenix. The victory gave the second-place Pistons a 32-22 record in the Central Division and sets the scene for a confrontation with the first-place Milwaukee Bucks Wednesday night at the Silverdome. Notre Dame 61, Loyola 60 SOUTH BEND (UPI) - The way Digger Phelps figured it, this was going to be a game for the Notre Dame bench to win. The way Phelps figured it wasn't the way it turned out. IT TOOK four missed potential game-winning shots by, Loyola (Mo.) in the last 15 seconds for the Irish to escape with a 61-60 victory last night. "We played it to win and we played it to get the respect of people around the Division I circuit," Coach Mark Amatucci said after the 13-12 Greyhounds game within a tip-in of i major upset. But they took advantage of 7 missed Irish shots to open the second period and 5 of 13 Notre Dame foul shotting to close within 61-60 on an Aubrey Reveley steal and lay-up with 42 seconds left. Vernon Hill's theft of a Jim Dolan pass with 29 seconds left gave the Greyhounds a chance to shoot for the victory.. DAVID GATELEY missed with 15 seconds left and Mon Hicks misfired with 6 ticks remaining, but the Greyhounds were awarded the ball out of bounds. Gateley got the ball off the inbounds play and missed from just right of the foul line. Kevin Carter, game high-scorer' with 21 points, missed thke tip-in just before the horn.
