(AP) - For- ward Mike Giomi scored 16 points last night and guard Steve Alford, coming off the bench for the first time this season, added 14 as 11th ranked Indiana buried Northwestern in a 22-2 second half avalanche for a 77-50 Big Ten Con- ference basketball victory. The hot-shooting Hoosiers hit 11 wallop straight field goals during that eight- minute spurt, including six in a row by Giomi and three by Alford. ALFORD, a 6-foot-2 sophomore who had averaged more than 20 points and was Indiana's only player to start every game this season, was on the sideline for the first 12 minutes as Coach Bob Knight used the 10th different starting I POSTERS AR T Wildcats combination in the Hoosier's 13 games. Northwestern never led, but there were three early ties and the stubborn Wildcats stayed close the first half, trailing by only three points when Alford entered the game. Alford hit his only two shots in the first half as the Hoosiers maintained a narrow 29-24 edge at the intermission. After Alford got Indiana's first basket in the second half, Northwestern came no closer than three points, and the Hoosiers broke the game open with a string of 12 straight points. Consecutive baskets by Marty Simmons and Alford, three straight by Giomi and another by Simmons gave Indiana a 47-31 lead with 13 minutes to go. JOHN PETERSON broke the streak for Northwestern, but Indiana then ran off another 10 straight points for a 57-33 lead before freshman Milan Petrovic got two free throws for the Wildcats. The victory lifted Indiana to 2-1 in the conference and 10-3 overall. North- western fell to 0-2 and 4-8. Simmons finished with 12 points, while Uwe Blab added 10 for the Hoosiers. Northwestern was led by An- dre Goode with 12 points and Peterson with 10. The victory lifted No. 17-ranked Michigan State to sole possession of first place in the conference at 3-0 and raised its overall record to 12-1. Purdue drop- ped to 1-2 and 10-3. Purdue led 63-57 with a minute left in the second half of regulation, but the Boilermakers managed only a single free throw by Robert Littlejohn the rest of the way. Vincent's seven-point streak, capped by the tying basket with 12 seconds remaining, sent the game in- to overtime at 64-64. KEN JOHNSON scored on a three- point play and Vincent added a basket and six straight free throws as Michigan State blew out to a 75-64 lead and cruised to victory. Scott Skiles finished with 15 points and Johnson ad- ded 14 for the Spartans. Vincent had-only six points in the first half, and Purdue held a narrow 27-25 lead at the intermission on a basket by Everette Stephens at the halftime buz- zer.
