The Wolverines held the Illini to slightly better than 36 per- cent, themselves shooting 56 percent on the way to a 57-45 win. The defense was not there, but Roy Tarpley's offense was, as Michigan topped Purdue 96-85 last Thursday. Also the game's high scorer in the Illinois game, the junior center scored a career high 31 points against the Boilermakers. Michigan head coach Bill Frieder, however, declined to single out any one player. "It's been a solid team effort," he said. "We're getting a lot of mileage out of a lot of people at different positions." ESPN's Esocoff said Michigan has been helped in the ratings by wider national exposure, including network coverage of the Kansas game and ESPN coverage of the Illinois and Iowa games. "It 's always tough to overcome the exposure Indiana gets in the Midwest," said Esocoff. "Once (the Wolverines) L overcome that, they should get what they deserve." The surprising triumph boosted Leach, 1982 NCAA singles champion, into the quarterfinals of this inaugural two-week, Grand Slam-size tour- nament. -Leach dominated Wilander, who has won three Grand Slam tournaments, in the second set, ripping off the first four games, then holding serve in the sixth and eighth games to move into the next round. "It's beginning to turn into a dream," Leach. said after-his victory over Wilander a day after he upset No. 10 Jimmy Arias. Swimmers dunk Iowa They've been the surprise of the Big Ten this season but they don't wear tank- tops, play on the hardwood or dribble the roundball. That's right, Coach Jon Urbanchek's swimmers do none of that, but they do cut through the H20 faster than any challenger. In Iowa City Saturday, the Wolverines nosed by the Hawkeyes, 63- 50, to retain their hold on the Big Ten lead and up their record to 6-0, 3-0 inside the conference. Diving near his home town of Cedar Rapids, Kent Ferguson edged out teammate Bruce Kimball in both diving competitions to give the Wolverines a 14 point advantage in the diving. hines in Florida Said Urbanchek, "If we didn't have the diving, Iowa would have won by one point." But he refused to credit the victory to his divers: "We shouldn't look at it like that. Diving is just two events in swimming." Themcoach preferred to pin the suc- cess on his swimmers, two of whom shattered old school records. Junior Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) Clement bettered his own mark in the 1000-meter freestayle. Freshman Jon- Erik Olson brought down a twelve-year- old record with a splendid performance in the 200-yard breaststroke. Assistant Coach Mark Noetzel praised Olson saying, "It was especially impressive since he's only a freshman and that was the oldest record in Michigan history." -STEVE HERZ How's the food Vernon? KALAMAZOO (AP)-Coach Vernon Payne doesn't mind that his family voted him out of the house and into a dorm room. It's part of his plan to turn around the basketball program at Western Michigan University. Payne, 39, resides in Room 615 in Western's Eicher Hall. He is the lone occupant; his roommate for the last 19 years, his wife, Dorphine, is at home with the kids. "It's like dating," Dorphine Payne said of the unusual living arrangement. "I do go over there and visit with him... take a bottle of wine." At the start of the week, the Broncos were 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the Mid- America Conference, compared with season records of 4-22 overall and 2-16 in the conference a year ago. USFL to try replays NEW YORK (AP)-The United States Football League said yesterday it may go ahead with the use of taped replays to decide controversial calls even if the networks that televise the league of- ficially won't participate in the project. "I think it will go in for the regular season if it works at a second test," Byrne said. Daily Photo by CAROL L.
