Marie? Here's a hint: it is in Michigan. Barely. Regardless, Michigan's hockey team will be making a trip to the upper peninsula this weekend to square off against Lake Superior State College tonight and tomorrow night. THE LAKERS (wonder how they ever thought of that nickname) are resting quite comfortably in second place in the CCHA, thank you, boasting an impressive 19-13 (18-10) conference record. The students at Ohio State cot ild fill their arena 31 times. 1D Most people haven't heard of the school let alone its hockey program, yet here the Lakers are with three weeks lef t in the season, sitting second only to mi ghty Michigan State. 'WE'RE NOT Michigan State, we're La ke Superior," said head coach Frank An zalone, now in his third year with the La kers. "They can beat us on any gig en night. We know that." ,Anzalone shouldn't sell himself short. He ! has accomplished the seemingly im possible with a student body about thv3 size of South Quad and Markley put to;ether. Just as a comparison, Michigan, wl iich offers one of the richest college ho >ckey traditions and best educations in the country is nowhere near the top te n. At 11-20-1 (9-16-1), the Wolverines ai e excruciatingly mediocre. OF COURSE, it would be unfair not to point out that under new head coach R ed Berenson, Michigan is the dE afinition of a rebuilding team, and a focus on the Wolverines is not intended. The big question, rather, is how does a school with the size, stature and location of Lake Superior build a major college program? Superior recruiting (no pun intended). "First of all, we can't beat Michigan State out (in recruiting), that's said and done," said Anzalone. "But after Michigan State and Wisconsin and maybe North Dakota, we feel very capable of competing with every school. "WE WON'T get any great star of North America, but we're getting that 25th through 30th best kid now, and that's going to make you a good program. Michigan State gets the top ten kids." Anzalone is not particularly an ac- complished tactician. A 1978 Buffalo graduate, this is his first college coaching assignment. But obviously his warm, personable manner has gained him credence as a top recruiter of hockey talent, talent which should keep the Wolverines' hands full this weekend. "I'm expecting them (the Wolverines) to be hungry," said An- zalone. "It's very important for their egos to make the playoffs. Three schools, Michigan (19 pts.), Miami (18) and Ferris State (17), are fighting for two playoff positions. So even though the Wolverines dropped two games to the Lakers at Yost earlier this season, the push for the playoffs could bring out an extra effort on the part of Michigan. "I'm expecting a team that needs some points," said Anzalone, "that will make them a better team right off the bat." "Laker killer" Mark Chiamp wiU have his goaltending work cut out f0' him against an offense that averages 4.66 goals per game. Chiamp has always been tough against Lake Superior. Down 2-0, John Ogrodonick scored his 34th goal of the season with five-and-a- half minutes left in the first period on a power play. Teammate Steve Yzerman slid into St. Louis goalie Rick Wamsley while passing Ogrodinick the puck, starting the Wings' rush. DETROIT TIED the score one minute later as captain Danny Gare stuffed the puck past Wamsley assisted by Randy Ladouceur. After St. Louis regianed the lead, the Red Wings' Claude Loiselle notched his fourth goal since joining the NHL two weeks ago on a shot from behind the net which hit the skate of Blues' defen- seman Gil Delorme and slid just over the goal line to tie the score at three. Dwight Foster tallied two minutes later on a penalty shot and Kelly Ksio added a pwer play goal with 3:08 leftin the second period. Detroit led 5-3 as toe priod ended. ST. LOUIS dominated the third period, outshooting the Wings 17-14. Craig Levie scored with 10 minutes, remaining on a pass from Jorgen Pet- tersson. 4 Doug Wickenheiser tied the game with 5:38 left in regulation on a breakaway off a faceoff. He scored the shorthanded goal with Reed Larson hanging on top of him for the last 40 feet to the goal.
