That old fishing line can sometimes apply to college athletics when a discarded recruit or a transfer comes back to haunt a team. MICHIGAN'S hockey team has had its share of "ones that got away," in- duiding such standouts as Mike Don- nelly and Troy Thrun. Thrun, now with Western Michigan, transferred from the Wolverines after being cut by former coach John Gior- no. Thrun only went on to score 23 goals and 29 assists for the Broncos last year. Donnelly, a left wing for Michigan State, is an example of a recruit Gior- dano failed to reel in. Now Donnelly is the second-leading goal scorer for the Spartans. MSU, the nation's number- one ranked team, hosts the Wolverines tonight in the first game of a home-and- home series. "WHEN I was coming out of high school, I talked to Giordano," said Donnelly. "He wanted to wait until my final grades to see if I'd be accepted (by Michigan). Then I was accepted and I went back to him and he told me he had given the scholarship away." tt up wit At that point, Donnelly, a junior from Livonia Franklin High School, went on to State. He made coach Ron Mason's final cuts but decided to play junior hockey for a year to add strength and experience. Michigan's loss has proved to be the Spartans' gain. "HIS ABILITY to skate is his best asset," said Mason. "He has great ac- celeration and he's always a threat anytime he's on the ice. He's able to finish a play well." Donnelly has finished a play with a goal 18 times this season, second only to Craig Simpson's 20 on the team. Among those goals are five game-winners and two against Michigan earlier this season. "I like to play them (Michigan)," the 5'11", 176-pound winger said. "I know some of the players well. I play in the summer with six or eight of the guys. I seem to play well against them." WITH A total of 20 players from both teams from the state of Michigan, the traditional Wolverine-Spartan rivalry is almost a paradox since many of the players are close friends. Paul Kobylarz, Michigan's senior right wing, is also from Livonia and played against Donnelly in high school. "A lot of our players know a lot of Michigan Hockey Statistics their players," said Kobylarz. "Mike's a really good friend, I've skated with him the past few summers. We run into each other quite a bit at rinks because everybody's looking for ice time." BUT ONCE the players hit the ice in CCHA play, the friendship ends and the rivalry begins. "Just the fact that you're playing State is incentive enough," said Kobylarz. "If you can't get fired up for Michigan State, you can't get fired up for anyone. The friends and everything adds to it, but there's incentive anytime you play Green and White." Donnelly also enjoys the rivalry. "It's great to play in front of fans that know me, since I'm from Michigan. When I was younger, I never heard about Michigan State hockey. I always heard about Michigan. It's great to be able to play against them." CERTAINLY all hockey fans have now heard of the Spartans, who have a 15-game winning streak and a 25-3 overall record. Donnelly is far from being a big fish in a small pond. "We have depth and experience," he said. We come with four lines every game, where most teams have two good lines tops. We seem to wear teams down." The Spartans are wearing down the CCHA as they lead Lake Superior by a comfortable 12 points. MSU has a magic number of four to clinch the league title and could reduce that num- ber with a couple of wins over Michigan. The Wolverines have defeated State only once in the last fif- teen meetings. Both Mason and Donnelly are ever- cautious about the team's chances for the NCAA championship, as is typical of players and coaches who don't want to admit how good their team is. But chances are the Spartans will again challenge for the title in Detroit. "Before the season, our goal was to win at Joe Louis three times (site of the GLI tournament, CCHA and NCAA playoffs)," said Donnelly. "So far, we're one-for-one (the GLI) and we're hoping to get down there again." 'T Action SportsWear FACTORY CLOSEOUTS * SWIMWEAR. " FOOTWEAR " BODYWEAR 419 E. ' swimmers set to sink Indiana } By EMILY BRIDGHAM Kicking off the season with a bang, .the Michigan men's swim team will face arch-rival and last year's Big Ten _hampion the Indiana Hoosiers, tonight in one of the biggest meets of the season. Tonight's dual met will feature four ,Qlympians. in an important contest, according to Michigan head swim vcoach Jon Urbanchek. "INDIANA WILL be our true test," will need to rely on our veterans in the dual meets, but this year's freshman class will be instrumental." DOMINATING THE Wolverine squad are sophomore Dave Kerska in the sprint freestyle event, junior Lance Schroeder in the 100- and 200-meter fly, and junior Mark Parrish and freshman Jan Erick Olsen in the 100- and 200- meter breaststroke. The freestyle distance races, provide a talented mat- ch-up with junior Olympian Benoit "We have a good diving team," he said, "but whether or not we can com- pete with teams of Michigan's caliber is a question mark." Heading into tonight's meet, the Hoosiers are sporting a 4-1 overall record and a 1-0 conference mark, after clobbering Ohio State 74-39. Coached by Doc Counsilman, Indiana has claimed 7 NCAA titles and 21 Big Ten Championships. Building the strong nucleus of Hoosiers are Cliff Looschen and Doug Boyd in the sprint freestyle, with John Waldman at the helm in the breaststroke events. Adding depth to the Indiana squad are distan- cers Madruga and Vellejo. In addition to tonight's meet, Satur- day the Wolverines will square off with Wisconsin at 2:00 p.m. The Badgers are 5-3 and 1-0 in the conference after defeating Iowa, and should challenge the Woverines in the distance and backstroke events. The 7:30 contest at Matt Mann Pool should go down to the wire, according to Urbanchek. And at $1 may be the cheapest action in town. "They have a good record, but we're pretty tough once we get going." The Wolverines are going into the meet after downing two smaller swim clubs, but although the squad hasn't been challenged with a conference meet, Urbanchek feels they will rise to the occasion. "Indiana has been rated number one by swimming polls around the country, but we have been gaining on them in the past few years," said Urbanchek. "We Clement challenging Indiana's Olym- pian Juan Carlos Vellejo and Roger Madruga. The only problem for the Michigan squad may arise in the relay events, but the hopes are that Michigan divers Bruce Kimball and Kent Ferguson will pick up the slack in the one- and three- meter diving competition. Indiana diving coach Hobie Billingsley is unsure how his squad will fare against such harsh competition as, the Wolverines.
