LEADING THE way were senior Joe McFarland, freshman John Fisher and senior Scott Rechsteiner. All three swept their respective matches. Fisher, a 126-pounder, picked up his first win of the trip in Thursday's 33-15 victory over Indiana, scoring a 9-5 win over Jeff Bentley. McFarland came through with a pin of Hoosier Todd Snooks, the 134-pound Wolverine captain's first official match since suf- fering a knee injury on December 10. Steve Richards (158 pounds) and Kevin Hill (167 pounds) also pinned their opponents, while 177-pound Rechsteiner won his match by default. The downer of the meet occurred when 190-pound junior Ray Yerkes dislocated his shoulder while wrestling in a rare start in place of senior Bill Elbin. ACCORDING TO Wolverine head coach Dale Bahr, 118-pound sophomore William Waters was the key to Saturday's 27-11 win over Illinois. Waters rolled up a one-and-one-third point lead before recording the pin over Illinois' Jeff Harp. Following Waters in the lineup, Fisher and Mc- Farland won three-point decisions without too much trouble. Rechsteiner picked up his second win of the trip with an 11-0 thrashing of Illini Dave Bourbor. And 158-pound junior Steve Richards turned in a sur- prising pin. Richards is now 18-11 on the year. Michigan jumped out to a whopping 16-0 lead in Sunday's match with Purdue before finishing the blowout, 34-10. Waters pinned his man to run his record to 22-9, while McFarland dished out a 19-3 thrashing to make his record a sizzling 26-1. FISHER TOOK a four-point decision 10-1. He now leads the team in victories at 30-5. Bahr says that Fisher, Waters and McFarland are probably the best trip rivals 1-2-3 combination in the c9untry. The Wolverines' three heaviest starters have been nearly as impressive. Rechsteiner got his second pin of the trip at Purdue's expense to go to 24-2. Bill Elbin and heavyweight Kirk Trost each picked up his second win in West Lafayette. Trost blanked the Boilermakers' Calvin Vande Hoef 16-0 for his 28th victory, second on the team. Elbin breezed by Bob Picchioti, 11-4, to up his record to 23-10-1. In the absence of Tony Latora, who is sidelined with a sore knee, Michigan lost all three matches in the 150-pound class. Latora's replacement, freshman Guy Russo, lost the Purdue match by just two points, however. "Give him another year and he'll be win- ning those matches," said Bahr. Bahr is glad the trip is over and said that the hectic part of the season has ended as well. "We make one gallant effort every two years to hit everybody... we don't want to make two trips down there for three schools," said the Wolverine helmsman. Michigan is now 8-1, 4-0 in the Big Ten. 14 A Edwards is OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)-LaVell Edwards, coach of college football national champion Brigham Young, has been selected coach of the year in balloting by the Football Writers Association of America.
