That secondary of Tony Jackson, Brian Carpenter, Marion Body and Keith Bostic was young and inex- perienced, and none of those players had started any previous games. But it came together and was a leading force in the Michigan defense that held its foes out of the endzone in 22 consecutive quarters.. THIS SEASON'S group is also very young. No seniors are in its makeup and it is littered with inex- perienced ballplayers. But the '84 unit does have one advantage over its counterpart of four years ago-a pre-season All-American in Brad Cochran, a player who has been at Michigan only one full season. The Royal Oak native finished second on the team in tackles last year and led the Wolverines in inter- ceptions with five, including two in the season finale against Ohio State and one in the Sugar Bowl. It was a surprise that Cochran was even on the 1 team in '83. He saw some action in the first three games of his freshman year, but wasn't happy with his situation and transferred to Colorado, where itr was discovered he had a chemical imbalance in his' blood system that was causing his mental distress. WITH THAT out of the way, Cochran re-enrolled atf Michigan last summer and went on to start every game of last season at cornerback. But after Cochran and junior Tony Gant, who lined up at free safety during the last eight games of '83, the defensive backfield is thin in game experience. The cornerback spot opposite Cochran was open following the graduation of John Lott. But coach Bo Schembechler designated sophomore Garland Rivers of Canton, Ohio as the starter there even before spring practice began. RIVERS SAW action in five games last year and made six stops against Purdue. He was the only freshman to earn a varsity letter. The key spot to be filled is the strong safety position vacated by Evan Cooper. Junior Dieter Heren plays t with a style admired by Schembechler and was listed at the top of the strong safety depth chart after spring practice. "Heren's a hard-hitting kid," said Schembechier. reminiscent of Secondary depth chart CORNERBACK FREE SAFETY STRONG SAFETY Garland Rivers (So) TONY GANT (Jr) Dieter Heren (Jr) Al Bishop (So) Dwayne Freeman (So) Doug Mallory (So) CAPS indicate returning starter. Suspect punting could be tr By MIKE MCGRAW Michigan is bringing in fresh players at quarterback and offensive line, but coach Bo Schembechler says those positions don't concern him too much. What especially bothers Schem- bechler, though, is the special teams. The Wolverines seem to be okay when it comes to the placekicking-record- holder Bob Bergeron returns for field goals and Todd Schlopy again handles kickoffs-but when it comes to the pun-- ting, . there will be inexperienced players at all positions.
