He sent this letter to the Daily. Dear Wolverines: It is a major disappointment to B. Y. U. fans that you have been selected to play their team in the Holiday Bowl. Surely, they lament, the 6th ranked team in the Big Ten is not worthy of being on the same field with their rightous (sic) boys. They are indignant about having to play a team with a 6-5 record when they are undefeated in the powerhouse Western Athletic Conference. The selection of lowly Michigan to play B. Y. U. is a slap in the face of S million Mor- mons. But as is their way, they will turn the other cheek. They know they are better than you are. Their devinely guided passing attack will smite the heathen Wolverines into submission and they will retain their rightful position as the chosen ones. Good luck...you'll need it. Robert Loy Mr. Loy works at KUTV (a Salt Lake City TV station) and is not a follower of the God Squad. He is a fan of second-ranked Oklahoma, which would likely take over the number-one ranking if Michigan beats Brigham Young and the Sooners knock off Washington in the Orange Bowl. When asked why he sent us this fodder for Michigan's lockerroom wall, Loy said irritatedly, "I'm asmember of the public and I have the right to send a letter to any newspaper...And I question your worth as jour- nalistic institution if you don't print it." Oh. now you've done it, Bob. You done gone and questioned the journalistic worth of the Michigan Daily. That's going too far. You're a class act. Bob. I think the BYU mentality is rubbing off on you. By the way, I hope your Sooners choke big time in Miami. As far as Michigan not being good enough for the Holiday Bowl, well, Bo Schembechler has an answer for that one. Back in 1973, when Big Ten teams could only go to the Rose Bowl, the Wolverines went 10-0-1 and didn't go to a bowl game. So Bo said he figures they owed him this one. Sounds an awful lot like the same kind of logic The- Gruff-But-Lovable-One used after Michigan eeked out a lucky one against Wisconsin (thanks to six Badger turnovers) earlier this year. "I didn't see anybody feeling sorry for us last week (when costly Wolverine turnovers hurt in a 20-11 loss to Washington), so I'm not going to feel sorry for anybody this week." Fact remained: Michigan was dominated by Wisconsin that day. Fact remains: Michigan does not deserve to be playing in the bowl game that determines the national championship. So what should Michigan have done? Turn down a bowl invitation? Hell no! It's not Bo's fault the polls have a bogus number-one selection and the poor old Holiday Bowl couldn't get a better team to play the Brigham Youngsters. Bo's attitude is what the hell, if they'll take us we'll go-and he's right. Still, you know something's not right when the number-one team in the nation will not have played a single team ranked in the top twenty in the final poll. Of course, before those polls close there still is a question of a little ol 6-5 team from Ann Arbor... Zurbrugg favorite in spring QB race Now that we've seen three different men at the quarterback position, it will be fun to see who comes out on top after spring practice. Here's my assessment of the candidates: 1) Chris Zurbrugg: My favorite and easily the favorite to win the job. He's already better than Harbaugh was at the time of his injury. Zurbrugg throws well and has a knack of three years of eligibility "Kickoff '85" cover mat Harbaugh's left shoulder says he will be ready for huge setback. There's no u brugg by March, or evenS He's a tentative runner an floaters. Solid back-up ma lot like Haubaugh really, now. No glaring weakness one thing that well. The Wolverine defense was as tough as ever this season, allowing an average of only 16 points per game. 1 U-M Department of Theatre PRESENTS WILLIAM SHAKESPE ASYC LIKiE Directed by Philip Kerr December 5-8, 8:0( December 9, 2:00 THE POWER CEl TICKETS AT PTP-MICHIGAN LEAG Daily Photo by DAN HABIB One of the key plays of 1984: Mike Mallory blasts Wisconsin running back Joe Armentrout at the one-yard line and he coughs up the ball.
