You've got to keep that idea in perspec- tive. You can never hurt the kid." HE HAS NOT hurt too many kids, earning warm praise, from many, current Wolverines for his sincerity and honesty as a big time recruiter. To go along with his time consuming recruiting efforts, Hanlon portrays Michigan football in a positive light everywhere he travels. He is a sought after commodity at football camps, luncheons and associations all over the country. Hanlon has received offers for other coaching opportunities, but nothing has been good enough to lure him away from Bo and Ann Arbor. And it is a good thing for Michigan, too. "Bo wouldn't have had near the suc- cess he's had if it weren't for coach Hanlon," states Betts. "Those two are .so close it's unbelievable. Coach Hanlon calls most of the (offensive) plays from the press box. The two of them are in constant communication during the games. Their minds are like clockwork. "Coach Hanlon is so important to the success of the team that his abilities cannot be emphasized enough," con- cluded Betts. It's those abilities that have helped make Schembechler's 15-year reign in Ann Arbor a legendary one. And for 15 years Jerry Hanlon has been the sub- stance behind the Schembechler juggernaut. Waving like a nut falls into the "do" category. And now, here it is, the do's and don'ts for 1984 Michigan football. (Play close atten- tion freshmen.) DO: " Attend every second of every home game. Failure to do so is in- dicative of a lack of school spirit. Only wimps lack school spirit at a place like Go Blue 'U'. " Go as nuts as you possibly can in- side Michigan Stadium. If you need to down some beers to reach this hyper' state of mind, go ahead. " Wear Michigan, maize 'n' blue clothing. Painting your face and body is vigorously encouraged, but op- tional. " Learn to despise those four Mickey Mouse institutions in descen- ding order of importance - Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan State and Iowa. , Bring binoculars to the games, guys-some of Michigan's pom pom girls have interesting physical con- figurations. " Bring binoculars to the games, gals-you can look all over the stadium and gossip about how tacky certain people look. " Buy the Michigan Daily during the week for its fine football coverage, but avoid the opinion page. * (Shy guys)Grab that lucious sophomore you've been staring at five rows in front of you when Michigan scores its fifth touchdown of the after- noon. She'll never see you in the con- fusion of the celebration. (PS to the gals annoyed at these sex-starved pigs-what the hell, mom and dad probably didn't see it happen on television anyway). " Wave like crazy if the opposing team gets inside the Michigan 20-yard line. " Respond cordially to that non- student scalper or poorly-informed student who whines, "down in front," when you stand in the excitement of the moment and block their precious little view: "This isn't the opera, bud- dy." " Remove the cap of an opposing fan when it is within reach and pass it on up and out of la stadium. A little nastiness adds diversity. DON'T: " Come into the stadium 10 minutes into the first-quarter expecting to sit in your ticket-designated seat. " (Gals with a status complex and/or the need to be chic)Dress for the games as you would for a Friday night at the bar. This is a football game, not a fashion show. * Tell your friends, "I can't go to the game, I have to go to Stanley Kaplan's. My LSAT's are in less than a month," or, "I've got to go to the library, I have a mid-term on Mon- day." Nice life-that's the way to budget your time. " Root for Illinois. " Absolutely DO NOT boo Michigan's quarterback or any other Wolverine player if he makes a costly miscue. I used to boo ex-Wolverine defensive back Marion Body ('83) and reflecting on those misguided days, I was way out of line. ' Look Wolverin of Educa are smar siderably discipline " Imita They hav yet trea thusiasm crime. 'Stay Wolverin in Ann A wimp. 'Bring the stadit There I of '84. Go BLUE.
