QB tradition continues r FIRST0F AMEJCASM BYU Sports Information Robbie Bosco sets to strike again. BYU is first in the nation in total passing yardage and total offense. The Cougars average 36 points per game. THE UNIVERSITY CUB By DOUGLAS B. LEVY If you're looking for the scapegoat, blame it all on one Jim McMahon. Had McMahon been a failure, sanity may have prevailed in Provo, but the man had to be the greatest there ever was. In 1980, McMahon was a junior quar- terback at Brigham Young. That season he led the Cougars to an 11-1 record while completing 284 of 445 passes for a mere 4,571 yards and 47 touchdowns! ! ! THAT WAS the point of no return. Had McMahon been a dud, maybe coach Lavelle Edwards would have mellowed on the passing attack. But no, and the tradition is growing... Robbie Bosco has blossomed into perhaps college football's finest signal- caller in just his first year at the helm. 1984 was expected to be a rebuilding year for the Cougar offense. Only four starters returned from the '83 unit which was piloted by superstar Steve Young, McMahon's successor. But from day one of the Bosco era, it was clear that BYU was not only built, it was overloaded. "THERE'S JUST something about Brigham Young. Quarterbacks come here and they know how to read coverages and pick apart defenses from day one," said BYU All-WAC defensive end Jim Herrmann who has also played with Young and McMahon. Last season, afterncompleting an NCAA-record 71 percent of his aerials for 3,902 yards and 33 touchdowns, Young signed the still mythical $40 million contract with the USFL's Los Angeles Express. And it was thought that there was just no way that the Cougars would be able to find a replacement to equal Young's extraor- dinary accomplishments. Edwards introduced Bosco, a 6-3, 188- pound junior from Roseville, Calif. Bosco doesn't have the running ability that Young possessed, but his passing has equalled if not surpassed that of his immediate predecessor. "HE'S ON STEVE'S level right now and could be even better. Robbie has the potential to be the best ever next year," said BYU's All-WAC split end Glen Kozlowski. Kozlowski was on the receiving end of 59 Bosco passes. Last year he caught 29 passes from Young, and as a freshman in 1981 caught 29 tosses from McMahon. Bosco's stat sheet indicates that the Cougars are in the possession of their kinkofs The Campus Copy Shop HAPPY HOUR - slt- gem. COP=E From 9 p.m. - 12 a.m. Monday thru Thursday 540 E. BEFORE BOSTON College's final game against Holy Cross, Bosco was second in the nation behind Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie in total of- fense per game with 327 yards to 334 for the BC ace. In an even closer statistical battle, Flutie edged Bosco in passing ef- ficiency by 151.84 to 151.83. A Full Service Bank *24 HOUR BANKING ANN ARBOR OFFICES *101 S. Main 995-7800 *505 E. Bosco credits his success to his ability to read defenses and hit the secondary receiver. "The key to being a good quarterback is making the right reads. My greatest asset is being able to pick up my secondary receivers," said Bosco. PICKING UP secondary receivers shouldn't have been very difficult for the public relations major, because on 75-percent of all Cougar offensive downs, five would-be receivers are sent running. Tight end David Mills led the team with 60 receptions for a whopping 1,023 yards and seven touchdowns. And Mills doesn't believe that any defense is capable of stopping the BYU ; stampede. "If I ever had to play BYU, I would go out and get Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes (two All-Pro NFL defensive backs on the L.A. Raiders) to be the cornerbacks," said Mills. Mills ex- plained that when teams were forced to double-team himself or Kozlowski, someone else always got open. IT WOULD BE natural to assume that the running game might get lost in such an emphasized passing attack, and to a certain degree it has. ' But in Lakei Heimuli and Kelly Smith, the Cougars extract every possible rushing yard.
