D BLOOM COUNTY Watch for it in ie tx tortgN W t Records (Continued from Page 6) works from "Madame Bovery" to Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina." Donizetti's main opus has a tendency to be eclipsed by the prodigious output of his contem- porary, Verdi. The story-libretto takes place in Scotland about the year 1700 and con- tains the standard elements of a historical novel as well as Gothic romance. There are ghosts, evil prophesies fulfilled, forged letters, and - of course - a classic mad scene. The star-crossed lovers embrace a destiny in which communion is reached only through death and transfiguration. "Verranno a te sull'aure" has become a model duet for lovers parting. Edita Gruberova's performance is restrained and doesn't quite convey the loneliness or the great staying power of the human heart. As a result, the later mad scene isn't as convincing as it might be. Yet Edgardo's death as sung by Alfredo Kraus contains the full sub- text of violent emotion - the passionate stillness as well as the Nietzscherian amor fati. The mellifluous melodies swell just enough toaccent the-pathos of Edgardo's destiny. He longs for death with a sweeping fervor because he believes he will finally be united in peace with Lucia. Other highlights include the choral epilogue to Raimondo's "Dalle stanze ove Lucia" wherein the Ambrosian Opera Chorus demonstrates an ability to turn a well-known phrase with a bright, new inflection. -Mike Gallatin Subube to Tke KIekigaK Dai4 I W H OLE E A RTH CAITA ZLOG The Best Software, Hardware, Magazines, Books, Accessories, Suppliers, and On-Line Services for Personal Computers Dancer Emily Schottland will perform tonight in a collaborative arts con- cert sponsored by the University's dance department.
