The Buckeyes, only 6-7-1 after a second-place CCHA finish last year come to town for a two-game series tonight and tomorrow at Yost Ice Arena. ;bhIO STATE lost Paul and Perry Pooley, two of the more celebrated college scorers in recent years, to graduation. 'But that loss is not the primary reason for the Buckeye's slow start. Coach Jerry Welsh's team has suf- fered numerous injuries to key fresh- men which Welsh believes has preven- ted OSU from realizing its potential so far. "We've had a tremendous number of injuries," he said. "That's' been a bigger factor than the missing seniors from last year. I think people look to shallowly at most of the teams in the league and say they're noted for a couple of things and that's it. I think we're a lot better than most peolple think." WELSH BELIEVES he had a good- recruiting year but several of those newcomers have missed action. Defen- seman Mike Nightengale broke a leg in the spring and is just now beginning to skate again. Center Rick Brebant has appeared in only two games, due to injuries. Bill Brown, who Welsh called the team's second or third best forward in pre-season, broke his- collarbone early in the year. He may be back in ac- tion tonight. . One freshman who has played and played well is center Darcy Gryba. Gryba has scored at least one point in each game and has seven goals and 16 assists for the season. "He doesn't do a lot of things well, but he can score goals and that's what we thought he'd do," said Welsh. THE BUCKEYES feature a well- balanced attack, with the scoring coming from a number of sophomores. Dave Beaudin 'has 10 goals in 14 games; after scoring 15 all of last year. Right wing Joe Tracy (7 goals, 12 assists) and left wing Mike Wurst (5 goals, seven assists) are also having improved seasons. "These.are players who have never gotten great ice time," said Welsh. "They had some ability but just didn't have the opportunity to play (last year)." SENIOR MIKE ROUSSEAU and cap- tain Mark Shortt head a strong defense in front of one of the better goaltending tandems in the league. Junior Bob Krautsak will get the start in goal tonight for Ohio State. Krautsak is 3-5-1 with a 4.15 goals against Welsh will decide on Saturday who will start that night's game, but it will likely be senior John Dougan (3-2, 3.56). THEY'RE BOTH playing fairly well," Welsh said. "They're similar in effec- tiveness. I'm not looking for a one- goalie system right now." The Buckeyes have yet to win both games of a weekend series. Welsh was disappointed in his team's performance against Ferris State (a split) last weekend and thinks that Michigan is a better team than its record, 5-9, in- dicates. That's small consolation for Michigan coach Red Berenson, however. Yesterday Bereson was on a. recruiting trip to Ontario and he's. probably wishing for some immediate help. SOPHOMORE Brad Jones, the team's leading scorer' (12-8-20), will miss several games with an injured right leg. Jones has been a consistent performer on an otherwise inconsistent team. So far this season, it seems as though one night the Wolverines will score plenty of goals but the defense will break down. The next night, they'll get a fine defensive effort but have trouble putting the puck in. the net. Last weekend against Lake Superior, Beren- son said penalties played a major role in a 6-3 loss. The Wolverines, in particular left wing Chris Seychel, hope to get un- tracked against OSU. Seychel, the team's second-leading scorer (5-11-16), was benched last Saturday because he Berenson didn't feel he was giving "110 percent." Also expected back in the lineup is defenseman Todd Carlile, who suffered a head injury last Friday and sat out the following night. Carlile is expected to be back in the Wolverine lineup after being injured in last Friday's game vs. Lake Superior State.
