And you've got Don Canham and Bo Schembechler to sell, who are institutions in themselves. It's easy from that standpoint. The problem you run into is sometimes the kid isn't the guy who is going to make the decision. So now you're dealing with second and third and fourth parties, and then we don't like to get into that. Sometimes the playing time becomes a factor with the kid, and other schools will promise him that (he is) going to start and then, even though they've lied to him, worry about it once they get him. I don't promise anybody any 4hing. I don't have any obligations to anybody. So you lose kids on those reasons, but you just work hard at it. You'll have to ask (assistant coaches Steve) Fisher and (Mike) Boya what makes me a good recruiter. Q: Can you tell us what sort of high school players you are looking fort BF: We need to get some size. We've got (6-10 forward John) Oosterbaan but we need two more big players. And we need to get one more guard, preferably. a bigguard or a swing player to go with Billy Butts now. We only have eight players returning on scholarship after this year and four of them are seniors. What happened with our 7-20 season was we got cut short because we had a couple of in- juries and we just didn't have size. When people say "Why would you go there, they got Rellford and Tarpley and Henderson and Wade," you say to them, "Hey, who do we have after your freshman year?" We got one kid over 6-5 and that's Stoyko. So we have to get some size. This is a crucial, crucial year for us to get size. We're recruiting six to eight players and hope to get a couple of other big guys. Q: How is it looking? BF: Well, we've got two committed already and we've never had two com- mitted this early in the fall in the history of Michigan basketball. So we're headed in the right direction. Q: How do you keep your players into their studies? BF: We have a mandatory study table Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., at Mason Hall. In addition to that, they've got two times a week where they have to meet with their tutors out at the learning cen- ter. I get the reports on those every week. Who they met with, hours scheduled, hours attended, comments, currently working on, completed, per- formance satisfactory, unsatisfactory and so forth. If I don't like the report then I discipline them with extra running or I send it on to their mom or dad or high school coach or something like that. You have to go to class and you have to go to study table or you're not going to make it at Michigan. Since I've been head coach, not counting Eric Turner who left after his junior year, thirteen seniors have gone through and 12 of them have got their degrees. That's far better than the university in general, and it's probably better than all of the other Big Ten schools. We do a helluva job on that. I make those kids utilize Spring and Summer terms, not only if they're not eligible but if they're eligible. That has come back to haunt me. I lost McCor- mick and (Jon) Antonides this season because I do a great job on them. So I might change my attitude on that and not make them go to spring and sum- mer school, because you got a lot of fif- th-year players in the league like (Richard) Mudd at Michigan State. You go around the league, Indiana always has fifth-year players. I don't have fifth-year players because I'm on their butts getting them to go to school and summer school and getting them to graduate on time. I've kind of gotten penalized for it because I do a good job. I should be rewarded if I do a good job but they won't admit my players to grad school. Marty Bodnar and Paul Heuerman were both rejected at our law school and now they're both attorneys. And I'll guarantee you they'll be as highly successful attorneys as any of the guys we put out from our law school. So we're doing a great job on it.
