By TIM MAKINEN Hoy-as noun 1.: an intimidating, versatile force, e.g., Georgetown's Patrick Ewing. 2.: team most likely to capture NCAA basketball title in 1984-84 campaign. While nothing is ever clearly defined in college basketball, one thing is extremely likely--the Georgetown Hoyas will be one of the four teams to make it to Adolph Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ken- tucky next March. Georgetown must be considered the favorite to win it all. No cage squad has snagged back-to-back national championships since John Wooden's UCLA Bruins pulled the trick in 1973. The defending champ Hoyas appear ready to change that. With a bench as deep as the Pacific Ocean, the imcomparable 7-0 Patrick Ewing, and three other returning starters, Georgetown will have to commit hari-kari not to be a contender. The Hoyas even have Michael Jackson (a 6-1 junior guard). How can you beat it? ONE CANNOT say enough about Ewing. The senior center led the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal and has demonstrated a defensive style reminescent of the NFL's Dick Butkus. Ewing has even revitalized the t-shirt industry by making the un- dergarment a permanent part of his jersey. Talk about enterprising. Front line counterpart Michael Graham, a cross between Marvin Hagler and Uncle Fester, will miss the season due to academic problems, but the Hoyas are still the team to beat. If any team has a chance at getting Georgetown, it could be De Paul. Seniors Tyrone Corbin and Kenny Patterson combine with sensational sophomore Dallas Comegys to give the Blue Demons a force the likes of which has not been seen in Chicago since the Richard Daley era. THE QUESTION remains as to whether first-year mentor Joey Meyer can lead DePaul in the clutch. Will Joey inherit his father's classic choking act in the-early rounds of the NCAA tourney? A demanding schedule could hamper DePaul's ranking during the season. Georgetown and DePaul aside, college hoops will see two conferences, the Big Ten and the Atlantic Coast Conference, exhibit the best all-around play. As Michigan fans know, the Illinois Biting Illini have four sharters back, including All-America candidates Efrem Winters and Bruce Douglas. Those two can break an opponent's will faster than you can say "probation." Bobby "I'll crack your wrist if you write anything bad about me" Knight's Indiana Hoosiers also will challenge for the top spot in the national rankings, despite the addition of a 45-second shot clock which will prevent Knight from employing his infamous stall tactics. Olympic guard Steve Alford and 6-5 freshman Delray Brooks provide the Hoosiers with one of the best backcourts in the nation. IN THE ACC it should be a dogfight between Duke and North Carolina State. No team should be counted out of this basketball-mad conference, however. It seems that ACC players are born with high tops on their feet and, if you thought the Duke players were also wearing diapers last year, you were pretty close to the truth. That young Blue Devil squad has sur- vived its growing pains and has matured into a dynamite team. Led by junior sharpshooter Johnny Dawkins, Duke should be on everyone's top ten list. Lorenzo Charles and the N.C. State Wolfpack will hound Duke for the conference title. Even if you can't stand coach Jim Valvano's blabbering, you've got to like a team whose top playmaker is a 5-7 senior named "Spud" Webb. No national preview would be complete without mentioning a few of the big names in the game today. Unquestionably, Oklahoma All-America, All- Olympic, and All-Universe candidate Wayman Tisdale will spread his magic again this season. The 6-9 junior averaged a blistering 27 points per game in 1983-84 and may be the best thing to come out of the Sooner state since the completion of Interstate 70 in 1958. Look for Oklahoma to finish high. ANOTHER Olympian, Chris Mullen, could spark the St. John's Redmen to a hatchet job on Big East opponents this season. The Redmen must contend with conference rivals Georgetown and Syracuse so a scalp-or-be-scalped situation may arise in the East. Although his team may not be quite top ten caliber pro scouts will want to stay in touch with Memphis State senior Keith Lee. Lee should repeat his All- America performance of last year while teaming up with seven-footer William Bedford to create a truly devastating inside duo for the Tigers. Southern Methodist's 7-0 Jon Koncak could be the center of attention in the Southwest Conference, although Arkansas Joe Kleine may also try to grab the spotlight. If you're not th pians Koncak and Kleine, it's p have been playing in the shad center Akeem Olajuwon the 1 returning starters though, Kc will step out and shine this sea FINALLY, Kentucky will a the nation. The Wildcats did 1 Turpin, and Dickey Beal to gr it, after the way those guys c semi-final against Georgetown lucky to get a job cleaning s Kentucky coach Joe B. Hall ir the nation and 6-8 junior Kenn his 12.8 scoring average. DEPT. OF "WHAT ABOUT Houston?
