However, it turns out the investigation was routine and all the accusations were false. "The NCAA came in and there was an official investigation," explained Boyd. "But it was the same investigation that they have every year on the top thirty kids in the country. They always come in and ask questions. "When the so-called allegations that were made by the coach were checked out," Boyd went on, "they found out that he was wheeling and dealing and looking for a deal. The sad thing about it is that he said things about Gary an- d his family that just weren't true." TRUTH IS one of the main elements of the Michigan program, and is something that Boyd and Frieder stress when dealing with a recruit. "We never tell a young man when he comes in here that he is going to start for our program," said Boyd. "If he comes in here and beats somebody out, of course he's going to start. But we're not going to promise him that." Generally, the Wolverines will start to make contact with a potential recruit as early as his sophomore year in high school by sending him letters or in- viting him to Ann Arbor for a basketball game. Things start to get a little more intense when the player is a junior. "JUNIOR year you've got to upbeat it because now you get to the point where different things are influencing the kids," said Boyd. "They look at this school because of this, at that school because of that, so you've got to work a little harder." By the time the player reaches his senior year, during which he makes his official visits to up to five schools, recruiting can turn into a full-scale war. Someone who knows about the battles is Stoyko, who was highly sought after as a senior last year at Bay High School in Bay Village, 0. "It was really hectic come my senior year," remembered Stoyko. "I had narrowed 226 colleges down to five. During the fall I could not come home and sit down for five minutes without the phone ringing and without looking at more stuff teams sent me. Sometimes I came down and said 'Mom, if the phone rings and it's for me, I'm not home.'" Once a player decides to visit Michigan, the coaches have 48 hours to show him what the program and the University are all about. But, usually, that's not too difficult. "WE REALLY don't have to sell Michigan to them," said =' Boyd, "because Michigan sells itself. What we have to sell is the basketball program. This University has too much pride and tradition and class that it doesn't have to have somebody going door to door to sell it. Once we get a kid to visit, we don't really have to worry about it." "If you get a kid to visit, he's nuts if he doesn't consider Michigan," claimed Frieder. "The kids in our program are super, our athletic program and tradition is tremendous, and our facilities are second to none." One final element involved in the visit, and the recruiting process, are the Michigan players themselves. "The players play a big role," noted Boyd, "because when we bring the kids in for visits, if (the players) find Assis something wrong with the kid ther or don't like the kid, they'll tell us and nine times out of ten we're not going to recruit the kid. When that kid comes into our program, he's got to play with them-these are his team- mates. These kids have to be able to get along with the recruit, and the recruit has to be able to get along with these kids." During the visit, the recruit gets a taste of what University life is like by staying with different players.
