4 Page 10- The Michigan Daily -Tuesday, November 20, 1984 BATTLE WITH BYU A POSSIBILITY AHoliday for Michigan? qw By DOUGLAS B. LEVY Keep your pants on Wolverine diehards, Michigan may be going to the Holiday Bowl to face the top-ranked Brigham Young Cougars. "If we don't get Auburn, right now Michigan is our number one choice," said Stan Bates, a top Holiday Bowl of- ficial last night. "We just have to wait and see tomorrow.'' HOW CAN it be? How can a 6-5 team, tied for sixth place in the Big Ten receive an invitation to any bowl game, let along the game that may be respon- sible for crowning the 1984 National Champion? The explanation is a simple one. Today the Southeastern Conference (SEC) will rule on the bowl eligibility of the University of Florida. Several weeks ago, Florida was placed on NCAA probation for three years which will prohibit the Gators from appearing in both post-season bowl games and on television. The SEC's ruling today will decide whether or not Florida should be ruled Daily Photo by DAN HABIB Ohio State fullback Barry Walker powers his way past Wolverine defender Tim Anderson in Saturday's 21-6 Buckeye victory. ineligible for this season's round of bowl games. The Gators are 5-0-1 in the SEC this year and have clinched their first-ever conference title. The winner of the SEC annually plays in the Sugar Bowl. BUT IF Florida is ruled ineligible, and it is believed that this will tran- spire, then Auburn would most likely go to New Orleans. LSU still has a shot at the Sugar Bowl, if Florida is ruled ineligible and if Auburn loses to Alabama on December 1. Of course, by Decem- ber 1, all other bowl arrangements will have been finalized. Currently, Auburn is going to San Diego to face Brigham Young and LSU is going to Memphis, Tenn. to battle Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl. Should Auburn fill in at the Sugar, the path is clear for Michigan to face the 11-0 Cougars. There are literally no other quality teams left that could play against Brigham Young. Stand by for the SEC's crucial decision.- THE ONE man who refused to get caught up on all the speculation is GRIDDE PICKS What a weekend for upsets. Al Rossi, Alan Beland, and Pete "Sweet Meat" Anderson: you guys are history! In the final weekend of the Griddes season, Marcia Johnson squashed her heavily-favored rivals to capture the firsthGriddes crown for a member of the fairer sex. Johnson dug deep into the ar- chives of her Museums Building of- fice and pulled out a stunning 14-6 relic. Only the free, one-item, small pizza she will receive from Pizza Bob's may top the thrill of victory. Finally, this just in: Daily Libels 21, Ohio State Lantern 0. Michigan head coach Bo Schem- bechler. "I have nothing official from anybody," said Schembechler yester- day at his final press luncheon of the year. "As I sit here, there is nothing I can tell you." Michigan would have one problem with making a Holiday Bowl appearan- ce. The date of the game is December 21, which falls on the last day of final examinations. Michigan's Director of Athletics, Don Canham, has stated in the past that bowl games would never be permitted to interefere with academic scheduling. The question arises, would Canham stand in way of such an enthralling op- portunity. Canham was in Chicago yesterday and could not be reached for comment. Southern Methodist would face Notre Dame if the Fighting Irish can upset USC this Saturday. If Notre Dame falls, then Michigan could be treated to a superb Hawaiian vacation. Five Big Ten teams are committed to bowl games. Ohio State will face USC in the Rose Bowl. Iowa is slated for the newly created Freedom Bowl in Anaheim, Calif. Wisconsin will compete in the Hall of Fame Bowl in Bir- mingham, Ala. and the Spartans from Michigan State are scheduled to appear in the inaugural Cherry Bowl at the Pontiac Silverdome. Purdue appears Peach Bowl-bound. Stay tuned for further details. SCHROEDER NAMED ALL-AMERICAN: 'l' runs eighth in nation Special to the Daily UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn.-The University of Arkansas lived up to its top billing by capturing the NCAA Men's cross country championships at Penn State University yesterday. Michigan, ranked 12th of the 21 teams in the finals, came away with a surprising eighth-place finish. It was the third- highest finish in the school's history. COACH Ron Warhurst, who had said before the meet, "We're shooting for the top ten," got his wish and was elated with the result. "The boys came through," he said trium- phantly. For Michigan, Bill Brady and Chris Brewster placed 38th and 45th, respectively. Both finished the wind-chilled, 35- degree, 10,000 meter course in under 31 minutes. Brewster had a philosophical outlook on his personal placement. "There were 44 people in front of me who wouldn't get out of my way," he said. ARIZONA took second place, followed by the University of Tennessee, the defending national champions, which Warhurst called "somewhat of a surprise." Michigan's Big Ten nemesis, Wisconsin, finished fourth. The University of Illinois, which had defeated the harriers in both previous en- counters, slumped to 14th place. On the woman's side, Michigan failed to qualify a team in the finals. There was vindication, however, in the form of junior Sue Schroeder. Running individually, Schroeder finished 20th, and captured All-America honors for her per- formance. Total First Downs . Rushing ......... Passing ......... Penalty ....... Total Net Yards ...
