The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 9, 1984 - Page 13 The Weekly Da iy Line Any undergraduate enrolled in our fine University who claims to not be aware of this week's special guest, should sit down and reevaluate his or her reason for existence. Shakey Jake is Ann Arbor's ultimate character, roaming the streets at will, bringing a smile to many a face. BUT WHO IS this elusive personality? And most significantly, does he know anything about football? "I've just got to find out about this guy before I graduate," said Doug Levy. " 3esiaes, this will be an excellent oppor- tunity for me to gain some ground on the special guests." Shakey Jake Woods claims to be 85 years old, although he looks much younger. Shakey was born in Little Rock, Arkan- sas and eventually migrated to Ann Arbor in 1959. WHEN QUESTIONED as to his favorite sport, he replied, "I like all sports." Queried about his opinions on pop super- stars, Michael Jackson and Prince, Jake noted that they are both fine talents. He seems to prefer Prince over Michael. Last week's special guest, Wolverine baseball coach Bud Middaugh, went 6-3-1, throwing the guests, Levy and Mike McGraw into a three-way tie at 57-31-2. Sweet Katie Blackwell is still far out in front with a 63-25-2 mark. Bo's favorite admits that -her"biggest 'ihieen stuffing her success in Levy's face. "I believe that Katie's extraordinary success is something that women everywhere should really rally around," said Levy. By MIKE McGRAW So far this fall, quarterbacks, defen- sive backs and linebackers have gone down with serious injuries on the Michigan football team, so why not an offensive lineman? Guard and co-captain Doug James was lost for the season when he broke his leg in practice on Wednesday, ad- ding to the long list of injuries that have plagued the Wolverines all season. "UNFORTUNATELY, someone fell on his leg (Wednesday) night and cracked a bone, so he's out for the season," said Bo Schembechler yester- day morning. "And that really hurts because he's really been our most con- sistent offensive lineman this season and of course, our captain and leader there." James will now join teammates Tony Gant and Jim Harbaugh on the sidelines in this season which has been the worst for injuries in Schem- bechler's 15-year Michigan career. "I feel very badly for Doug because he wanted to finish strong this season and has given us great leadership," said Schembechler. "It's just another one of those things. What can you do?" THIS SETBACK means that James' playing career is over at Michigan. The fifth-year senior from Louisville, Ky. has been a starter for three years on the offensive line-at tackle in '82 and '83 before moving to guard this season. James' replacement this week is ex- pected to be senior Bob Popowski, a Chicago native who has seen limited ac- tion during his career. Schembechler has also moved Mark Hammerstein from tackle to guard to help fill the void. In other injury news, quarterback Russ Rein is still being hampered by a broken thumb on his left hand. But Schembechler said the sophomore could be available for emergency use. Minnesota's exciting freshman quar- terback, Rickey Foggie, who has been out since suffering a minor shoulder separation against Michigan State Oc- tober 27, is expected to start Saturday against the Wolverines in Michigan Stadium.
