4 Page 12 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 9, 1984 - Blue ever doesn't end with graduaton 9 w True Glue By Douglas B. Levy William Mazer Sr. ('28) is 78-years young. He hasn't missed a Michigan-Ohio State game since 1927. Mazer has a son, Billy Jr. ('52), who has missed maybe a handful of home games since he was eight-years old. Billy Jr. has a son affectionately known as Beaver ('83). In the fall of 1983, Beaver had an internship in Japan and missed the entire season. Other than that, he hasn't missed too many Ann Arbor Saturdays himself. The Mazers mean Michigan tradition. For the last four autumns, I have been exposed to this tradition. Pregame tailgate parties at the "Lot"-a parking area of Michigan Stadium. Whoever thought it would end? Certainly not the 17-year- old freshman who couldn't believe his eyes upon witnessing the majesty of Michigan football. Now the 2-year-old senior is on the eve of his finale. Reality has slowly etched its way in; the law school ap- plications are almost in the mail. This is the end Tomorrow is the end. When the Wolverines trot off Michigan Stadium's illustrious tartan turf, a great many seniors will have witnessed their final home games as collegians. "I haven't really thought about it, because I've got Ohio State next weekend," said Bobby Mitchell, an LSA senior. "Besides I'm going to come up for every game next year. I'll always be coming back." Mitchell is lucky enough to be from Highland Park, Ill. Did I really write "lucky" to be from Highland Park? That's it. I'll have to go to law school in Chicago. But what is it that makes Michigan football so totally spec tacular? After all, tomorrow will be Michigan Stadium's 60tt consecutive crowd of 100,000 plus. The masses are enjoying something, aren't they? This enjoyment isn't a result of just one particulr ingredient. There are many factors to explain the phenome4- al feelings that a fall Saturday in Ann Arbor can generate. Bo Schembechler's team is certainly a big part-th*t superbly coached squad in those wonderful maize and bl'ue uniforms. Big Ten football is a spectacle all by itself. There are also those who worship the Michigan Marching Band. Michigan's band puts on the most exhileratink pregame, halftime, and postgame shows in the world. On , good day one can sing 'Hail to the Victors' 20-25 times. And, of course, there are all the good times had outside th Stadium, both before and after the game. A whole "Lot" of fun Michigan's tailgate parties are the most spirit anywhere. Alums, faculty and students come together to e - joy themselves in unison. Michigan football is a celebratio of our society's most impressive elements. Hey, I'm not really saying goodbye to anything. Nobody s bidding farewell. Graduation doesn't mean a thing. The spirit can never die. The love of a Saturday of Michigan footbl will never wane. ' My days as a student may be coming to a close, but n"w I've got another 60 years or so of being a Michigan alumnus; Times may change, Bo may retire and Minnesota may 4o to a Rose Bowl someday, but the character of Michigan tradition will never change. 4 And the Mazers will always be tailgating at the Lot. I'm rhot saying goodbye, Uncle Bill, I'm just graduating. 4 I I Daily Photo by DAN HABIB William Mazer Sr. ('28), Beaver ('83) and Uncle Bill ('52) at their tailgate party prior to the Northwestern game.
