REIN, A RIGHTHANDER, broke his left thumb between the tip and the first knuckle. Though Rein said the cast will probably be removed on Sunday, Schembechler discounted using him Saturday. "He's definitely out for the Purdue game," Schembechler said. Rein was not certain how he got in- jured. "I was pitching the ball and then there was a sharp pain in my thumb," he said. "I don't know if I hit it on a helmet or what." This is the first week that Cernak has been getting a significant share of snaps in practice. The spell of bad luck suffered by Wolverine QBs has left Schembechler mystified, but not discouraged. "We're just in dire straights," he said. "We don't have anybody else available. "There's no use dwelling on it. We've had more than a half-dozen broken bones, we've had bad backs, knees, every kind of injury you can think of. Once in every career you have a season like ours.
