Women's wages catching up to men'9s SANTA MONICA, Calif. (UPI) - Women are closing the gender gap in the workplace and will experience a dramatic upsurge in income over the next 20 years, but by the year 2000 they will still lag far behind their male colleagues, the Rand Corp. predicted , yesterday. The report by the Southern California think tank was immediately attacked by a leading feminist for failing to con- sider work performed in the home and for "making a case to accept discrimination." THE STUDY said women's pay has climbed from 60 percent of men's in 1980 to 64 percent of men's in 1983 - the "largest and swiftest" gain of the cen- tury. It predicted, however, that if current trends continue -women will earn only about 74 percent of men's in- come by the year 2000. Economists James Smith and Michael Ward said the gains are due to women's improving market skills, par- ticularly those influenced by their education and work experience, rather than by affirmative action, legislation and political pressure. Spelling out employment policy positions for the Bureau of National Af- fairs, President Reagan and Democratic challenger Walter Mondale differed sharply on the question of co- mparable worth - the theory which holds that jobs of comparable value should be compensated at a com- parable rate of pay even if they involve different tasks. "I HAVE always believed that it is unjust to limit any individual's chance to fulfill his or her unique potential based on such irrelevant prejudgments as sex, race or national origin," Reag- an said. But asked if he supports the concept of comparable worth, Reagan replied, "as I suggested earlier, we support and enforce the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which prohibits sex discrimination in the payment of equal wages for equal work." Mondale said, however, that the Equal Pay Act has not ended - or even narrowed - wide discrepancies in the levels of pay given to men and women. "The fight for equal pay has stalled . because Ronald Reagan has systematically opposed all efforts to make pay equity a reality," Mondale charged.
