4 Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 26. 1984 a-The "THEY'RE A BUNCH OF COM- MUNISTS, DON'T READ WHAT THEY WRITE," instructed Wolverine head football coach Bo Schembechler. Yes, word got out that Schembechler told his players not to read the Daily sports pages because we're com- munists who don't know anything about gridiron glory. What the coach fails to realize is that the Daily's four football writers are his biggest fans on campus. When the Wolverines are obliterated by Big Ten. opponents, Michigan State and Iowa, the football writers here at 420 Maynard kiss their chances good bye of 'eekly Dali ever covering a Rose Bowl, one of the most prestigious sporting events anywhere. BO'S PROBLEMS stem from the fact that the gang of four who cover football are committed to reporting a 4-3 team. When asked to respond to Schem- bechler's charge of being Commies, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Gromyko were unimpressed. Only Katie Blackwell admitted that she was indeed considering Gus Hall, the Communist Party's presidential candidate, for the White House. Katie's favorite color happens to be red. 'RAISING HEL' did get a tad yline peeved. "Schembechler, who the Hel is Schembechler anyway. I'm a young Republican." Shying away from politics for a moment, we arrive at this week's special guest, Joe McFarland. Mc- Farland has dominated his sport as no other Wolverine athlete in recent years. A senior 126-pound wrestler from North Olmsted, Ohio, McFarland was runner up at last year's National Champion- ships and an All-American for the third time. McFarland's three-year mark is 124-20-4. One shudders to think what McFarland would do to Bo if Schem- bechler ever called him a Commie. McFarland .ice , :... 'I ; . , .: . I - Special Guest Paul Ilegren noug as B. Bblackens the Illini THERE ARE two anecdotes that say it all about Illinois head football criminal ... er coach . . . er crook . .. ah, let's go with coach, Mike White. In 1977, White was booted as the head coach of the California Golden Bear football program. In '77, White guided Cal to an 8-3 record. Head coaches at major colleges DO NOT get fired after going 8-3. In the 1984 Illinois media guide, White's biography is supported by quotes from professional coaches, testifying to the fact that White is the most "astute, outstanding and intelligent" man since Alexander 'the Great.' It is a point of fact that college media guides do not normally require suppor- ting quotations as to the character of their coaches. You see, Mike White is the biggest cheater still active in college athletics. He has built a winning football program in Champaign by virtue of deceit, illegal recruiting procedures and foul coaching tactics. Ask any Big Ten football coach to comment on White's program and you will inspire a shudder. White's five-year reign in Illini country has brought embarrassment after embarrassment to the integrity of the conference. How foul is White, you ask? Can a football coach possibly be so corrupt? Just consider the fact that three days ago the University of Florida was hit with a smashing three-year NCAA probation. Florida had un- dergone a two-year NCAA investigation and was nailed for a mere 107 rules infractions.W hite Florida's sentence is three years of not being able to play a bowl game and three years of not being permitted on television. When it became ap- parent that the Gator football program was finished, head coach Charlie Pell was im- mediately dismissed. Pell was considered a distinguished coach. Are you curious as to White's claim to fame? Last July, after a two-and-a-half-year in- vestigation, the NCAA nailed White to the wall for 187 infractions! White must have been jumping for joy when the boom was lowered on the Illini in July. Had the Illinois bust surfaced during the season, Moeller when it would have gotten greater press coverage, White's head coaching career would have been finished. Florida and her 107 violations gets three years, Illinois with its 187 gets one year. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. There seem to be some inequities with this one. "Mike White is a great coach. But Mike White is not the world's greatest administrator. I'm certain that Mike has learned a very bitter lesson," said Illinois Chancellor, John Cribbet last summer. Hey Illinois, who are you kidding. Have some integrity and fire this crum before he does more damage. In Champaign, White's name is held in the utmost reverence. That's one interesting community. For anyone who ever watched Batman and Robin on television, the overriding theme was that crime doesn't pay. Here's a trivia stumper for you: who was the head coach at Illinois before White arrived? Michigan's assistant head coach and widely respected defensive coordinator, Gary Moeller. Moeller left Michigan in 1977 for the Illinois job and in three years put together a miserable record of 6-24-3. Moeller was unceremoniously dumped by newly hired Athletic Director, Neale Stoner. Moeller was in the midst of a five-year contract but Stoner claimed that progress was not being made. At the time, several sources close to the Illini program admitted that Moeller was indeed doing a fine job. But Illinois was getting destroyed and Moeller was sent packing back to Ann Arbor. Should Bo Schembechler step down from his current job, Moeller would take over. Having been with Schembechler since Bo's Miami of Ohio days, Moeller was, and is cut in the 'honesty in athletics' mold. Says a Michigan insider, "Illinois has a good football team, but they go about it in all the wrong ways." And said Schembechler, "I'm not going to get into that this week," when asked about his position on Illinois. "I think everybody knows where I stand on intercollegiate athletics." Schembechler had known for the last couple of years that the Illinois program would get socked. But it was not Schembechler's job to put the Illini on probation. Illinois comes into Michigan Stadium tomorrow with a fine collection of talent. They may beat Michigan, they may not. But no matter the outcome, Illinois cannot go to a bowl game following the season. One should realistically expect the NCAA to stiffen its penalty against Illinois. But whether it does or not, Mike White and his ill-conceived program are the biggest losers of all. 4 day by the United Press International. In a balloting conducted of UPI baseball correspondents from each major league city, Anderson won the: AL's top manager honors by a 3-1 margin over Billy Gardner of the Min- nesota Twins while Frey was an easy winner over Davey Johnson of the New York Mets in the NL voting. "No manager wins awards - only players win the awards for them," said Anderson. "I've never.seen a last place manager win Manager of the Year. The players win that award for the manager. It's a special award and I am grateful for it because my players won it for me." Sitlier,.father okayv TORONTO (AP) - Center Darryl Sittler of the Detroit Red Wings was reported in good condition yesterday after an operation for a fractured right cheekbone he suffered during a National Hockey League game Wed- nesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Meanwhile, Sittler's father, Ken, remained in fair condition in the same hospital after suffering a heart attack while attending the game, won by the Maple Leafs 6-1. Nuggets' Cross out DENVER (AP) - The Denver Nuggets yesterday placed forward Russell Cross on their suspended list, saying he needs a few weeks of rehabilitative work on an old knee in- jury. Cross, who played at Purdue, was the sixth player chosen in the 1983 NBA college draft and played in 45 games for Golden State last year. He was waived by them last week and signed a con- tract with the Nuggets last Saturday. 0 I 9 It's the choice of the coaches JERRY ERIKSON'S COACH AND FOUR BARBER SHOP' Appointments Available - 668-8669 u 1 OFF ALL $9.00 HAIRCUTS with this coupon only Open Mon.-Fri. 8:30 - 5:30 I I806 S.
