ARTS The Michigan Daily . Friday, October 26, 1984 Karamazovs throw things, catch them By Dennis Harvey The Flying Karamazov Brothers ap- peared Wednesday night at the Power Center. The Brothers are five dubiously blood-related Caucasian males with mustaches and two beards. Primarily, they juggled. They also... Well. The Flying. Karamazov Brothers employed elements of the following things in their program: 1.) art history (references to the influence of Pablo Picasso on modern juggling); 2.) cool jazz; 3.) Prokofiev's "tortured tale of duck lust" Peter and the Wolf, as filtered through a certain Russian writer and retitled Ivan's Antique LUCKY COSTUMES ' "Your HALLOWEEN HEADQUARTERS Make-up Hats Masks Snakes e Feathers e Balloons " Glitter e Colored Florescent Hairspray " Glo Make-up " Crowns * Wigs " Ears " Noses " Col- ored Lipsticks " Nailpolish " Fangs " Blood " Capes " Guns " Swords " Boas Bullwhips " Punk Glasses " Fancy Masks " Costumes " Party Decorations " Streamers " Gag Gifts " Brushes " and much more! 305 S. "the ancient art of folding the spoken word, oralgami;" 8. grace under pressure when disaster struck ("Oh, it FELL DOWN! FELL DOWN!"); 9.) clown pants; 10.) gravity; 11.) step-by-step instruction in Zen juggling mysticism; 12.) barber- shop quarteting; 13.) good puns; 14.) bad puns; 15.) condescention ("We're not going too fast for you liberal arts folks, eh?"); 16.) pandering (they said 'Wolverine' once); 17.)kindness (they didn't do nearly as much to the people sitting in the front row as they threatened; 18.) plus. They also attempted at one point to juggle a pitcher of water, a Slinkee, and a large pumpkin. This particular situation resulted in failure-one of the few things until then lacking (along with the proverbial kitchen sink) from the FKB's performance. Mostly they just threw things in the air and caught them, then threw them again and caught them again, then.. . Well, I could go on. In fact, the one thing the Karamazovs did not do even once was anything much like Dostoyevsky. They did not commit parricide on stage; they had no trial or orgy scenes with hysterics and monologues. There goes my English 433 credit. Now I'll have to read the Cliff's Notes. That flaw aside, the FKB's were pret- ty OK bordering on astonishing. I know some people who juggle, but admittedly relatively few of my friends can play "Chopsticks" by juggling mallets against xylephones, and even fewer can be caught making dedications - "That was for Elvis! "-in the midst of tossing pins about. Classical mythology was not evoked, but otherwise the Karamazovshave culture of the last two thousand or so years fairly well covered. Indeed, by the end of the 2nd act, one begins to experience tremors of anxiety that, if not soon halted, these hippie freaks (pony tails in 1984! my god!) may soon be taking over the world-competently enough, no doubt, but think about the visual consequen- ces! Concert violinists eliciting inter- mittent squeaks of sound, between the sailings of bows in the air?! Housewives stretching three-minute eggs into an all-day affair by being reluctant to stop the palm-to-space-to- air rotation of eggs bought innocently at Kroger's!? Albums scratched to death by the figernails of practicing adolescents?! There is a real-dare I say Communist-danger lying in wait here. The Flying Karamazov Brothers of- fer, in their own words, "sex and. violence without the sex"-perfect en- tertainment, in other words, for children. The FKB's practiced one-liners are as flat as the paper you're reading this on (though, to their credit, they readily admit it), but their improvised com- ments are just as often sublime. FKB is an equal-opportunity outfit, no par- ticular troupe member given more at- tention than another: a.) It must be admitted that I especially liked Alyosha, a.k.a. Randy Nelson, who had a frizzy blond personality to go with his ditto hair; and b.) the mini-orchestra, which provided bemused musical commentary during the performance The Flying Karamazov Brothers 1 See KARAMAZOF, Page 7 mance to the Power Center Wednes Thriller Costume Ball Saturday, October 27 At the U-CLUB Dancing, I PRIZES FOP co-sponsor 9:30 P.M.
