Though you have been watching your team slide to a dismal 4-3 mark in 1984, the boys in Maize 'n Blue aren't quite dead yet. At least that's what the head honcho says, and he should know, right? At yesterday's weekly press lun- cheon, Bo Schembechler was asked if he will do anything differently this Saturday considering his team's dread- ful 26-0 clubbing in Iowa City. "YEAH," growled the veteran coach, "score." Michigan's lopsided loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes was the first shut-out the team suffered in a half dozen years. The loss was not particularly easy to swallow, especially since it almost assuredly knocks the Wolverines out of p signs ot Rose Bowl contention. "I can't stand these losses," Schem- bechler said. "I'm no different from anybody else. I can't stand it, but I'll survive." THE IOWA GAME was, in reality, the first real test of the Michigan offen- se since Jim Harbaugh went down with a broken arm in the Michigan State game. Quarterbacks Russell Rein and Chris Zurbrugg managed to complete a mere 11 of 25 passes and threw three more into Hawkeye hands. The ground game wasn't exactly powerful either, gaining just 104 yards in the game. Schembechler has no complaints in the quarterback department, however. "I don't think we ought to have a field day on these two kids," he emphasized. "It isn't their fault that they don't have the background. They're just trying to 1an- the rndp life in his team IF YOU STOP to consider what Rein and Zurbrugg are up against, you'd agree with Schembechler. Each had only taken 25 percent of the snaps in practice up until Harbaugh's injury. In the 1983 season, neither man was in the three-deep depth charts which read Steve Smith, Dave Hall and Harbaugh. "They (Rein and Zurbrugg) have not been through the same training," Schembechler said. "It takes a significant amount of time to train them. Too many things go wrong, but I don't blame them, I blame myself." The Harbaugh-less offense begins its third full week of practice and hopefully things will begin to gel, because its a rough road ahead for the Wolverines. Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota and Ohio State still lie in wait for the wounded warriors. "I AIN'T dead yet," claimed the coach. "When I beat one of these guys, you'll say, 'Wow, I didn't think he could do that'." And what about a bowl game, you ask? Well, it won't be a rosy one if there is one at all. Schembechler claims he hasn't even thought about a bowl game, yet, and he still claims the Big Ten champions will only have one loss. His next goal is to beat the guys that are coming to town next week - a very formidable Illinois team. And to listen to Schembechler talk about the character of his team, it sounds like an easy task. "We're not walking around with our heads down," he said. "We're Michigan, we've got pride. This team will not lay down and die, I'll guarantee that. I'll give you my word on that." The hosts, led by Valerie Madill and Sandy Barron who each shot 176 for the two rounds, came in fourth place at 702, far off the 646 recorded by the Spartans. Purdue finished third, and Ferris State brought up the rear. Two teams, the Michigan maize team, made up of golfers not on the traveling squad, and Albion, a club team, played for in- dividual scores and the team scores .were not tabulated. "I THOUGHT the girls played better down in Kentucky," Michigan coach Sue LeClair said. "Our course is harder than other schools'. It played long, and the teams had problems with the greens." Those problems showed in the relatively high score of Michigan State's Lisa Marino, who took medalist honors at 158. LeClair takes the linksters to Bowling Green next week for the season finale but next year, the squad will basically remain the same. "Sandy (Barron) is the only senior." LeClair said, "I'll have Missy (Bauer), Val (Madill), and others around for a few more years." Iowa, OSU slam stickers Offense continued to be a problem for the Michigan field hockey teams, which dropped Big Ten contests to Iowa, 9-2, and Ohio State, 3-0, over the weekend at Ohio State. The Wolverine offense was held at bay throughout most of both games, only breaking through twice against Iowa. Jamie Fry provided the first Michigan tally at 27:38 of the first half with an assist going to Tracy Gaskins. Lisa Schofield notched the other Wolverine goal at 27:13 of the second half. THE MEAGER goal output has been typical of the Wolverines this year, who have managed to score only 11 times in 15 games. "We're just not generating an at- tack," said head coach Karen Collins. "It's frustrating because our defense is playing very well. We're the type of team that can come up and beat any-. body." Netters nixed They served, they rallied and they volleyed, but no one on the women's tennis team could advance any further than the second round at the ITCA Rolex Midwestern Tournament this weekend. The tournament, the Wolverines' first of the year, gave Coach Elizabeth Ritt her first look at Big Ten and other mid- western schools as Michigan's head coach. Ritt, is no newcomer to Big Ten. Last year she was assistant coach at Wisconsin. PAULA REICHERT, Michigan's number one singles' player, was seeded seventh in the singles tournament, but lost 6-4, 6-4 in the first round to North- western's number one player. Reichert, a junior who received All-Big Ten Honors last year, also lost in the first round of the doubles tournament with teammate Leslie Mackey. Ritt said her young team played well in their first appearance of the season. "A lot of the other teams there had already played in competition; we hadn't. We weren't bad at all, we just know what we have to do now," she said. The Wolverines, who finished third in the Big Ten last season, look to remain a key team in the conference as they travel to Michigan State this weekend. "I think we're right up there," Ritt said. -DEBRA deFRANCES Batsmen break training Baseball fever may be over in Detroit, but it has only just begun for the Michigan ball club. The batsmen looked strong in their annual blue and gold games last weekend and should be a major contender once again for the Big Ten crown. "The team has depth, but the pitching is a lot of question marks," Middaugh said. He said that the club may be good, but since Ohio tate is returning nine pitchers and I iana is also strong it may be a tough ason. "There is no question it will be a competitive race," Middaugh said. --EMILY BRIDGHAM Crews cruise Charles On a beautiful fall day in Boston, Michigan's crew teams finished ap- proximately at the waist of the prestigious "Head of the Charles" meet.
