BERENSON HOPES TO PLEASE CROWD
Icers ready for home debut

,..

By MIKE REDSTONE
Tonight is the night.
Red Berenson, who was an All-
American icer for the Wolverines in the
early 60's, makes his homecoming of-
ficial tonight at Yost Arena as his
Michigan hockey team opens its first
home stand of the year, against Ferris
State.
SINCE Berenson did not play in what
is now Yost Arena during his career at
Michigan, this cannot be considered a
true homecoming for the ex-NHL star.
Nonetheless, Berenson is excited to be
back in Ann Arbor and is hopeful that
the Wolverines can put another one up
in the win column at the 1984-85 home
opener.
"We're looking forward to getting
started at home," said Berenson, whose
team opened the season last weekend
with a split against Miami of Ohio in
Oxford. "This is more than just another
game. I want us to get off on the right
foot and give people a good feeling
about our team."
Ferris may not be the team to play if
Berenson wants to impress the home
audience this weekend. The Bulldogs
are coming off a road sweep of defen-
ding NCAA national champion Bowling
Green last weekend and appear to be
confident coming into Ann Arbor.
"WE'RE TELLING our players to be
careful about over-reacting to our

sweep at Bowling Green, but at the
same time we are very happy with the
sweep," said Ferris State coach Dick
Bertrand.
Despite losing their leading scorer
and captain to graduation after last
season, the Bulldogs are ranked fifth in
the CCHA coaches' preseason poll,
primarily because of its freshman
class.
Ferris' two top scorers are both
freshman. Noel Caya had three goals
against Bowling Green last weekend,
while Darin Fridgen picked up one goal
and two assists in the sweep.
THE BULLDOGS are also led by
senior goalie Rob Hughston, who was
named CCHA player of the week after
his performance against the Falcons.
Hughston turned away all but six of
Bowling Green's 74 shots in the two-
game series.
Michigan assistant coach Mark
Miller is expecting contests similar to
last season when the two teams split the
season series, 2-2.
"I anticipate a close, tight series,"
said Miller. "They were all close
spirited games last year and we expect
the same thing this year."
Miller is also hopeful that defen-
semen Mike Neff and Gary Lorden will
be back in the lineup tonight after
missing last weekend's games with in-
juries.

Raising Hel
Hv PAUL HELGREN
Of Byars, Tigers and Bears ...
SSchembechier has his say
Since you are probably more interested in what Bo Schembechler has to say,
than me, I'm letting the General take over for a while.
" When asked whether he prefers a small, quick defense or a big, physical
one, Schembechler responded, "I would prefer a big, quick defense."
" While discussing Minnesota's upset of Wisconsin, Bo summed up his
philosophy on assessing opponents. "Don't underestimate.. ." He paused
and thought for a moment. "Don't underestimate anybody."
" Bo has been praising the Detroit Tigers all year so it was only fitting that
the World Champions came through with some payback. Thousands of
Michigan Stadium fans were listening to the World Series on their radios last
Saturday, and their reactions to the game flustered Northwestern's offense.
Said Bo, "Northwestern was in their own end and (Alan) Trammell hit a
homer and everybody cheered and the line went boops ! Offsides."
" You could keep a file on what Bo has to say about Ohio State's Keith
Byars - and I am. Here's what he said this week alone: "No, he ain't one of
the best. I've never seen someone like that" . . "He's a different breed" ...
"Byars. Huhhh! That youngster is something else" ... "01' Millie (Bo's
wife) says, 'He's only a junior and you shot your mouth off about signing kids
early.' He's gotta get out of here. He's ready" . . . "I went down there
(Dayton, OH) when he was in high school to see him play ... you could see he
was in a class by himself" ... "I don't think anybody compare to Byars in'
the game today."
" Still on the subject of Byars, a reporter asked Bo if he had ever coached
a better running back. "I coached Walter Payton," he responded. Huh?"
"Yeah, in an all-star game."
" Bo made his predictions for the rest of the Big Ten season. "We're gonna
win the rest of our games and you guys are gonna be surprised," he said
smiling. "My God, I didn't think that could ever happen."
" Someone asked whether offensive lineman Clay Miller, who was injured
last week, would play against Iowa. "He's gotta play. Unless there's a cast
on him.. . We're at the point where it's not negotiable."
" Never a man to withhold his opinion, Bo blasted the officials' controver-
sial call in the waning seconds of the Oklahoma-Texas game. "Let me tell'
you men, Oklahoma was robbed. That ball was caught in the end zone."
Replays showed Oklahoma clearly intercepted a Texas pass in the end zone, 3
but officials said no and Texas kicked a field goal to earn a 15-15 tie.
Now let's give someone else a chance ..
" Defensive coordinator Gary Moeller said holding has changed college
football into a more offensive-oriented game. "Holding is part of the game.
now," Moeller said. "You watch our (defensive linemen) - man sometimes
they're (offensive linemen) pulling their jersies to their knees. They hold on
every play. And when I said something to the ref he said, 'You guys are
holding, too.' Can you believe that? It's like saying it's okay to rob a bank
because we're doing it, too. It's still a crime."
" Sorry, Ed McMahon fans. A spokesman for WJBK-TV (channel 2) said
the station will televise the Michigan-Iowa game at noon tomorrow, and not
"Star Search" as is listed in the TV guide.
" Iowa coach Haden Fry made his predictions for the rest of the Big Ten
season. "Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa - one of those teams is going to win the
rest of its games.
" Michigan quarterback Russell Rein is sounding confident and that's a
good sign. "I want to improve," he said. "You always have to improve. And
the team has to improve. If we do that we should be able to beat any team left
on our schedule."
