SPORTS Tiger victory parade today at-noon Tiger Stadium T uesday, October 16, 1984 Page 7 T ough t By PAUL HELGREN Michigan's schedule for the next five weeks should be enough to make any coach shudder. The Wolverines, knot- ted in a four-way tie with a 3-1 con- ference mark, kick off a grinding Big Ten season finish this Saturday at Iowa, one of the co-leaders. After that it's back home to host Illinois, in second place at 3-2 but still dangerous. Then it's off to the green (and long) grass of Ross-Aide Stadium to face another 3-1 team, the surprising Purdue Boilermakers. Two weeks later the Wolverines travel to Columbus to face the Ohio State Byars. IF BO Schembechler is worried about this challenging grind, he isn't letting on. "I don't think there's anybody out there (in the Big Ten) that can run away from us," Schembechler said Monday. "They've all proven that they're vulnerable. None of them are undefeated, are they? "You show me one undefeated team on the rest of our schedule and I'll say, 'Oh my God.' I don't see any team that hasn't been beat," he said. BRAVE WORDS for a man that en- ters the stretch drive without his regular quarterback. Don't let him fool you. He's just not letting on. Bo knows what his boys are going up against. IOWA, ILLINOIS, OSU ON HORIZON eams ahead? Bofears not This week they'll gace an Iowa defen- se that features 11 returnees, including super-linebacker Larry Station, who leads the team in tackles with 61. They'll face a defense that defused an explosive Purdue attack, 40-3. "I couldn't believe what they did to Pur- due," said Schembechler. All this with inexperienced Russell Rein at the helm. It could be quite an in- doctrination into the Big Ten for Rein after a polite 31-0 debut against North- western. AND IT WON'T get any easier in the weeks to come. Schembechler rattled off the offensive stars Michigan will be seeing after the Iowa game. Keith Byars . . . Jack Trudeau . . . Jim AP Top Twenty W L T Pts 1. Washington (37) .... 6 0 0 1,135 2. An impressive catalogue of talent that should make the Wolverines the underdogs in three of their final five contests. That's fine with Schembechler. "That's nice," said Schembechler, when asked how he felf about not being favored to win. "That doesn't take the pressure off.. . but it is different, being the underdog." . BLUE BANTER: If you were skep- tical of the announced crowd of 102, 245 at Saturday's game consider yourself in good company. "I wonder how many people were really in our stadium Saturday?" pondered Bo Schem- bechler. Someone suggested between 90,000-95,000. "I don't believe that," Schembechler countered, "Because as you looked out you could see empty seats between the people" . . . Schem- bechler continues to marvel at Ohio State's plow horse Keith Byars. Byars had 274 yards against Purdue to pad his nation-leading total. "Ol' Millie (Bo's wife) says 'He's only a junior and you shot your mouth off about signing kids early.' He's (Byars) gotta go. He's ready." . . . Defensive tackle Kevin Brooks, who missed the Northwestern game with a bad knee, will play Satur- day . . . Safety Doug Mallory is questionable with a pinched nerve ... Running back Gerald White will be able to play after missing two weeks with puncture wounds to his arm and shoulder. Daily Photo by DAN HABIB Quarterback Russell Rein awaits action during last Saturday's 31-0 romp over Northwestern. Rein and the rest of the Wolverines face a much sterner, test when Michigan faces Iowa in Iowa City this week. Michigan football statistics TEAM Total First Downs . Rushing ......... Passing .......
