Last night, Cady's Redskins did a little hard labor of their own and nipped Michigan, 443 in front of a packed house at Goggin Ice Arena. Wolverene helmsman Red Berenson was the first to admit that Miami s stepped-up hockey beat his club, and was disappointed with a less-than spec- cular Michigan effort. "MIAMI PLAYED AT a much better .level," said the former St. Louis Blues coach, "and we didn't play as well as I would have liked." What Berenson didn't like was a con- test plagued by a myriad of penalties, which interrupted any Wolverine momentum. "The hockey was quite chippy onight," Berenson added, "Miami ame out with high sticks and our guys responded." That response took the form of 10 minor penalties, two of which induced Miami goals. MIAMI'S FIRST tally, however, came when it was shorthanded. The Redskins jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the fir- 1 st period after Mike Macoun was called for cross-checking at 4:38, giving Michigan a man advantage. Although shorthanded, Miami left wing Paul Beirnes grabbed the puck at his own blue line, raced through center ice and beat Michigan senior goalkeeper Jon Elliott with a snapshot to the top left corner. In the final three minutes, the Wolverines picked up the pace -- and their hitting - and pulled even at one when left wing Chris Seychel took a Bruce Macnab centering pass and flip- ped it past Miami goaltender Brent Smith, who never saw the puck. OBVIOUSLY deciding that the checking game would prevail, both teams started the second period hitting anything that moved. "We were playing quite a bit har- der," said Miami's Cady. "There was a big difference from last night in our playing the body, and taking the checks when they were there." Still, the added pressure gave neither team any advantage. At 0:37, Michigan's Dan Goff snapped the puck past Smith's right side for a Wolverine lead. But one minute later, Miami evened the score after John Ciotti knocked in a Mike Martinec shot off the right post. DETROIT had an opportunity for more runs when the dynamic duo of Whitaker and Trammell led off the fifth inning with a double and single, respec- tively. But Padre reliever Dave Dravecky squashed the rally by fan- ning Kirk Gibson, getting Lance parrish to bounce out to third base, and then striking out Darrell Evans. San Diego added a run in the final in- ning as Steve Garvey took home a wild pitch from Morris. The well-behaved crowd chanted "Who cares?" and then erupted as Gibson gloved a Kennedy liner for the final out. San Diego now has the unenviable task of having to win three straight from the Tigers. "We've done it once this year - we've won three in a row," said Padre manager Dick Williams. "Maybe we can do it again."
