O N OUR recent visit to the Palm
Tree Restaurant on Fourth Avenue
between Liberty and Washington we
were greeted by an elegant yet un-
pretentious atmosphere and a basically
completed selection of Middle Eastern
food.
One of us had already been there and
knew what to expect: well-prepared
food in a warm and informal at-
mosphere.
The menu at the Palm Tree provides
everything a Middle Eastern food lover
could want, plus a few extras. There's a
selection of soups, appetizers, salads
sandwiches and full meals, plus what is
considered by some to be the best
Bakalava in town.
We sample a variety of dishes and

babaganooj, were excellent. The art of
seasoning is evidently taken very
seriously at the Palm Tree and
everything tasted wonderful. There's
even cinnamon in the Falafel.
The Lentil soup, their "specialty" is
highly recommended.
Don't expect a normal lettuce salad
at the Palm Tree. We tried the Tabouli
and Avacado salads. Where the
avacado was rich and well propor-
tioned, the Tabouli salad, however, had
too much parsley.
A must for any lunchtime is the
Falafel Sandwich. It has very lively
seasoning and plenty of sauce. If you
get some of their custom-made fries
with the Falafel, you'd have plenty to
eat. The fries could be a bit crispier, but
according to the menu "each order is
made especially for you.''
As is the case with everything else at
the Palm Tree, they are made com-
pletely from scratch. The only thing
that isn't is the Coke, which had far too
much ice.
As a place for a nice quiet dinner, this
is it. Friendly service, Greek music,
and an interesting decor complement
the menu well. The specials come with
a salad and an appetizer.
We had the Shish Kabob and the
Chicken Breast Kabob. They both had
lots of finely seasoned meat, so much so
that there was no room for vegetables
on the skewer; but it comes with let-
tuce, tomatoes and Pita bread.
All of this is served on Styrofoam
plates in a very decorative way
achieving a good balance between
elegance and informality. You can top
off your meal with a Turkish Coffee and
pastry.
The prices do keep us from calling
this place cheap, but it isn't expensive.
Certain things are overpriced, but all-
in-all you pay a reasonable amount for
well-above average food from a foreign
land.
