Spikers adjust to new head coach respected her vast knowledge of the game, so the transiton between coaches -went very smoothly. "SHE'S AN excellent coach," said junior Jennifer' Hickman. "She knows what she's talking about and gets people motivated." "If you have a problem with your game, you can go to her and she can give you more than one way to fix it. She has a tremendous volleyball knowledge," said sophomore Wendy Confer. Canning's knowledge stems from her experience playing from 1971-74 for the UCLA varsity team which won the national championship in her freshman and senior years. SHE WAS assistant coach for the Santa Monica volleyball squad in 1975- 76 and then moved to Michigan where she took over organizational respon- sibilities for the Wolverine volleyball team and assisted Vong. "Sandy allowed me a lot of freedom," said Canning. "I was responsible for running off-season practices and tour- naments. I set up conditioning programs and even helped coach during matches." Canning is already fundamentally. changing the team's playing strategy. "FOR THE FIRST time, we're using a one-setter offense," she said. "In early scrimmages, the team combined noticeably better with the one setter.", A setter is the player who passes the ball high in the air so that it can be spiked down over the net by a team- mate. She is also running more organized plays than in the past. "Since we're several inches shorter than our op- ponents, we have to use more finesse and trickery," Canning explained. As well as moving up to the head coaching position, she has been made a full-time coach (Vong had been a part- time coach). This will give her time to recruit players from other states and the time to find the players to fit into the Michigan program. "THEY (the ideal players) must have intensity and the desire to win. They aren't satisfied with making a bad play or losing a point," she said. "Now at least I'll have time to find thi." It's also essential that the players be able to succeed in getting an education at Michigan. "They must have the men- tal capacity for U of M academics," said Canning. "The first thing we do (when recruiting) is make sure they're admissible." Even though ithe program doesn't have the financial resources of some of the other major colleges, the lack of a' big budget hasn't really hurt the team. "Success is in winning...I'm just dying to go out and beat all the teams that have all the money - you don't, need the big bucks to win a game," Canning said. "Barb has done a lot," said Hickman. "Her coaching has helped put volleyball on the map.", .4 { ArthurAndersen & Co. Not many. But one name does come to mind. Sophomore cross-country run- ner Chris Brewster, is a proud brother of the Phi Delta Theta house. A fun- loving guy in the fraternity and around campus, Brewster ig all business on the track. A SOPHOMORE from London, On- tario, Brewster burst into the cross- country scene in 1982. He nailed a first- place finish at the team's first meet of that season, the Springbok road race, held, ironically, in his home town of London. Soon after though, he was sidelined by an ankle injury and was redshirted his freshman year. The easy-going Brewster took the in- jury in stride, but it has taught him a lesson on the instability of an athletic career. "Messingup my ankle proves it can be all over before you know it," he says. Brewster does have a serious side but you wouldn't know it by listening to housemate Jim Ruth. "He's an ex- citable Canadian. He's a maniac. He definitely has hyper tendencies," said Ruth. THE SERIOUS Brewster was disap- pointed with the Wolverine's 17th place finish last season in the NCAA cross- country championships, and he asserts, REAGAN BUSTER T - SHIRTS (all sizes) $7.00 (cheaper by the dozen) Call Lisa at 995-9217 or 9206 , big tracks "we'll improve on last year's perfor mance, I have no doubt." In addition to looking for an overall team im- provement Brewster is looking to better his own performance. "If you look out for your own needs then the team will do well," Brewster explains. The last of six children, Brewster is used to a big family atmosphere. Perhaps this is why he savors -the Phi Delt experience. "BETWEEN THE social life and friendships you make it has so mush more to offer than the dorms or apar- tments," he said. "For me it's the only way to go." Brewster may be making a lot of friends in the fraternity but he hasn't been at all friendly to his competitors. At the Big Ten finals last year, Brewster came through in the clutch. With Michigan in need of a strong performance, Brewster came up with' one. He pulled away from an extremely talented field to capture the three-mile title. He considers that victory to be his greatest thrill at Michigan thus far. ==A "IT WAS a big emotional lift," he said. "It came at a really opportune moment and it let me know I could compete at this level." This extra dose of confidence Brewster has swallowed may make him an even greater threat in cross-country. Brewster hasn't just stayed ahead'of the competition in running. He has also been able to keep pace in the classroom. A double major in coi= munications and economics, Brewster has maintained a 3.0 grade point, doing a fine job juggling all of his time- consuming activities into the space of a day. 4 barry bagel's place =r 8 delicious fresh baked varieties HELP WELCOME US TO CAMPUS You didn't pull all those all-nighters lust to wind up making doohickeys.
