Schembechler and Perles meet the
press
'M'won't

keightly,
By KATIE BLACKWELL
"I think the difference between the
top team and the 75th team is not that
much," said Bo Schembechler at
yesterday's press luncheon.
All season long, Schembechler has
reached about the increasing com-
petitiveness among Division I college
football teams, especially in the Big
Ten. These days, however, the sermon
is taken more seriously, following
Michigan's narrow escape from em-
barrassment in Indiana. The 14-6
Wolverine victory was hardly what
most people expected after North-
western's 40-37 triumph over the
Hoosiers the previous week.
"SOME people think you should be
out to blow out Indiana," Schembechler
added. "But I don't think that's going to
happen anymore."
The very same feeling goes for next
week's intra-state rivalry in Anm Arbor.
Don't expect to see the Wolverines clob-
ber Michigan State like they did last
year. According to Schembechler, and
many of his Big Ten colleagues, the con-

The State News
EAST LANSING - Just about any
football coach will tell you that stats -
as a rule - usually aren't worth the
paper they are printed on.
Michigan State head coach George
Perles is among those who believe that
most stat sheets are best utilized when
you have to sit down for a while and
don't have anything else to do. And
when you're finished doing that, you
can even substitute the stat sheet for a
roll of Charmin, if need be.
BUT LIKE all rules, there are excep-
tions. "There are only three stats that
matter," Perles explained at his
weekly media luncheon Monday after-
noon. "First is whether you win or lose,
second is the amount of points you score
and give up, and third is the takeaway-
giveaway ratio.
"We are having too many turnovers.
That's why the rest of our stats are
down. That's why the opponents have
the ball more. That's why we're not
scoring."
Andthat's why the Spartans are
riding a three-game losing streak into
Saturday's annual battle with
Michigan.
MSU TURNED it over four times last
Saturday (two interceptions, two fum-
bles) in a 13-10 loss to Purdue, raising
its total in that department to an alar-
ming 14. Opponents have coughed the
ball up nine times, giving the Spartans
an embarrassing minus-five figure in
the takeaway-giveaway department.
"It's a problem because the teams
that are plus in that department usually
wind up at the top of the standings, the
teams that are around zero are in the
middle of the pack and the teams that
are minusdusually don't do too well,"
Perles said.
Michigan heads in to Saturday's
showdown with an impressive plus-
eight in that category. With that in
mind, it's no surprise that the
Wolverines are 3-1 (and were 0-5 in
takeaway-giveaway in their lone loss,
to Washington). Want more proof?
Purdue, currently shocking the football
world with a 3-1 mark, is also plus eight.
