COVER STORY RECORDS

Time capsule pages 3, 4,10,11
A concealed cabinet in the Union's study lounge
turned out to be full to the brim with materials from
the old Michigan Union Operas. Although largely
forgotten today, the Operas were one of the major
theatrical events of the state in their heyday. The
cover photo is of Durward Grimstead from A Model
Daughter in 1914.

The tide turns Page 9
Just as the new wave bands of a few years ago are
finally starting to make it big, a new crop of bands is
emerging to fill in the underground gap. Albums like
the Wombats' Zontar Must Die!, The Lyres' On Fyre,
The Pandoras' It's About Time, abd Battle of the
Garages Vol. II represent a whole new trend in the
music industry.

Careful He Might Hear You is the Australian ex-
port. Having won a slew of Australian cinema awar-
ds, it looked as if it might be the artistic highlight of
the year. Unfortunately, it's high-powered financing
seems to have worked against it, as it indulges in a
great deal of technology while missing some of the
spirit.

The pictures across these two pages
represent just a few of the many that were
found when cabinets along the east wall of the
Union study lounge were recently reopened.
The portraits along the bottom of the pages
are from 1908's Michigenda, the first opera
produced by the Michigan Union. The photo
with the slide rule was also from Michigenda,
and is itself an interesting story. Kept for
several years at the engineering school, it
was subsequently stolen, supposedly by law
students. Although in some of the photos it is
easy to tell that they are men dressed up as
women, it becomes difficult with Lionel
Ames, who purportedly went on to a
professional career as a female imper-
sonator.
