I Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 25, 1984 Gant goes down with broken leg By DOUGLAS B. LEVY Tony Gant's season is over confirmed Michigan head football coach Bo Schembechler yesterday at his weekly press luncheon. . Gant, Michigan's starting free safety broke two bones in his left leg last Saturday in the game against Big Ten rival Wisconsin. "HE'S IN THE hospital and feeling uncomfortable," described Schem- beehler. Schembechler further confirmed that Gant suffered the broken leg as a result of trying to cut upfield while returning a punt, and was not tackled on the play. "No one touched him," said the. coach. "He saw that if he could cut up- field he could go for big yardage. When he went to plant his leg it went straight into the ground and it just snapped." THE INJURY OCCURRED in the second quarter when Gant received the Badger punt at the Michigan 21-yard line. He rambled for 18 yards before going down while trying to make that last cut. "'Losing Gant poses a big problem for our defense," commented Schem- bechier. "He was really our leader out on the field. He's going to be very tough to replace." From his free safety position Gant was the signal caller on. defense. His responsibility was to assess the op- posing offensive formation and call the defensive play. It is Gant's leadership that will be missed most of all. STEPPING IN AT free .safety is sophomore Doug Mallory, who moves over from his accustomed strong safety position. Mallory was redshirted last year as a Hicks decided on who will fill Gant's shoes as signal caller. But a strong possibility is senior linebacker Mike Mallory, who served in that capacity last year after Mike Boren suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fourth game. Schembechler said that he would ap- ply to have Gant declared an injured redshirt, which means that the Fremont, Oh. native would still have two years of eligibility remaining-1985 and 1986. Gant's injury poses Schembechler with yet another problem. Who will be the Wolverine punt returner? Junior Gilvanni Johnson filled in on Saturday, returning one punt for seven yards. Steve Johnson is another player who can return punts as is freshman sensation Jamie . Morris. Gant will surely be missed, however, as he had returned a total of eight punts for an average of 9.5 yards per return. BLUE BANTER: And what about the sensational Morris who is already a special apple in Schembechler's eye. "All of us who were apprehensive about him playing Big Ten football can forget it. This kid can flat out play." You know Morris is doing something right when Schembechler compares the 5-6, 175-pound tailback to the legendary Anthony Carter. Said Schembechler: "He's one of those guys that's different from the rest. Like Anthony, he's tough as nails. He'll take on a blitzing linebacker at 90 miles an hour and put him down." One final note on Morris. He is the fir- st freshman that Schembechler can remember to be named Michigan's weekly offensive champion. Morris won the ac- colade as a result of his 220-total yard performance against the Badgers. BUT WILL Morris even get the starting nod against Indiana on Saturday? Last week Schembechler played Wisconsin without a 200-pound tailback available, something he would like to avoid. "We'll try to run Rogers and White today without pads," said Schem- bechler. Phil Webb is the other 200- pound tailback. The coach does expect both Rogers and White to be healthy for the clash against the Hoosiers. Fullback Eddie Garrett said after the Wisconsin game that he was close to 100 percent. Schembechler wants a healthy Garrett in the lineup because of his powerful lead blocking. SPEAKING ABOUT blocking, Schembechler has made a subtle change on his much maligned offensive line. John Elliot, the massive 6-7, 280- pound sophomore started against the Badgers at quick tackle. It was Elliot's first start at Michigan and Schem- bechler says he will start again against Indiana. All summer long Schembechler ad- mitted to having nightmares about his 1984 kicking game. Gone was punter Don Bracken along with fellow four- year starter, center Jim Sweeney who served only as long snapper. But now Schembechler is crowing. Place kicker Bob Bergeron has already crunched two 50-yard field goals and four for four overall. And punter Monte Robbins has shown only good signs in his first three games. Yet Schembechler felt com- pelled to apologize to the press for allowing Wisconsin to block one of Robbins' punts. "I'll try to correct it," sighed the coach. .. . could make first start freshman, and as a virtual rookie, Schembechler is apprehensive of giving him the responsibility of calling the defenses. Ivan Hicks is now the likely starter at Mallory's old spot, strong safety. Though a junior, Hicks has never star- ted a college game and only saw action in two games last season. Hicks' lack of experience makes him too an unlikely choice to serve as signal caller for the defense. SCHEMBECHLER POINTED OUT that the signal caller must come from the middle of the defensive formation. You cannot, for example, have a cor- nerback from the perimeter setting the defenses. The coaching staff has not yet 4 tr4 Daly rnoto by AN ri Tony Gant returning a punt against Washington. Gant is out for the year.
