And Celebrate!
The University Cellar, Inc. is proud of its fifteen years of service to the University community.
That's right! It has been 15 years since that fateful day, September 24, 1969, when 107 demon-
strators occupied the University Administration Building (now the LS&A Building) demanding
that the University establish a student-controlled bookstore. For the first time in history, the
state police were called to the campus to quell the disturbance. Police in riot gear cleared the
area of the hundreds of demonstrators outside and arrested those inside.
Later that semester, the University Regents provided $100,000 in cash and a rolling assessment
of $5.00 per student which was refunded when the student left the University. Thus, the Univer-
sity Cellar began operation on the first floor of the Michigan Union. In the Fall of 1970; we
moved to the basement of the Union where we remained for the next twelve years. In the
Summer of 1982, the Building Director decided he would rather have a national chain store in
the Union, and we moved to spacious new quarters on the corner of Liberty and Division.
Our other major expansion was in 1974. That was the year we established a second outlet in
the North Campus Commons to serve the schools of Art, Architecture, and Music. The Engin-
eering School was a recent addition to that community. That was also the year when we
stopped receiving funding of any kind from the University. We have been totally self-supporting
for the last ten years despite thefact that we now pay rent which is competitive with the
private businesses in the area as well as all sales taxes, property taxes, and employment taxes.
The University Cellar has always been run by the students and faculty of the University. The
Board of Directors is composed of seven students, three faculty, one University administrator,
and two employees. The President and Vice-President are required to be students. As a non-
profit organization, we use any surplus generated from operations to improve our service or
expand our product lines.
We are proud of our history and plan to celebrate the Fifteenth Anniversary of our conception
on Monday, September 24, with an Anniversary Sale featuring 15% off selected items
throughout the store.
We also invite all former members of our organization to a Reunion Party on Tuesday,
September 25, 9:00 p.m. In the Michigan Union Ballroom, the site of Book Rush #3 through
Book Rush #20. This party is open to all former employees, Board members, and the 107 people
arrested in the demonstration 15 years ago. We intend to have a great time.

On September 25, we will begin our 16th year of offering the University community the largest
selection of textbooks, reference books, student supplies, office supplies, art supplies, com-
puters, calculators, classical records, and U of M insignia items under one roof in Ann Arbor.
Fifteen years ago, we were the smallest textbook store in Ann Arbor. Today, we are the largest.
We want to thank the entire community for its support and will strive for your continued support in
the future.
