Page 10 --The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 11, 1984 'M' COACH PLEASED WITH OPENER, BUT.. . Bo shies away from high ranking Iw el.* By PAUL HELGREN Now that Michigan has defeated the top team in the country, the Wolverines are ready to claim the lead position in the polls themselves. Right? Don't point that we're-number-one finger at me, Bo Schembechlertold the media at his weekly press lun- cheon yesterday. "WE BEAT the number one team," Schembechler said, referring to Michigan's 22-14 win over Miami Saturday. "But that doesn't make us number one ... It doesn't mean 'this is the year' or anything like that." Schembechler's apprehension over a lofty rating is understandable. Teams that reach the number-one position in college football's weekly polls rarely stay there, especially in the early stages of the season. Schembechler knows that from experience. That's why he would rather let someone else shoulder that burden. But make no mistake. The 16-year-coach was quite pleased with his team's performance. "IF YOU really want to know the truth, it was a pretty good opening game," said Schembechler. All the Wolverines did was muffle the hottest quar- terback in the land, Bernie Kosar, and in the process stop Miami's 13-game winning streak. The defense picked up six interceptions and five sacks' and new starting fullback Bob Perryman scored three touch- downs. Pretty good, indeed. SCHEMBECHLER was especially pleased with the debut performances of certain key players. Most visible was the backfield - junior quarterback Jim Harbaugh, tailback Gerald White and fullback Perryman. But surprisingly, the biggest impact may have come from a sophomore from Great Bend, Kan- sas - punter Monte Robbins. Robbins nailed seven punts for a 43.4 average, in- cluding one boot of 56 yards. More importantly, he nailed down a spot as Michigan's punter, a position that has been a thorn in Bo's side in past years. "Monte's first performance as Michigan's punter was outstanding," said Schembechler of Robbins, who was named the team's Kick Team Champion for his efforts. "Monte handled the pressure and stepped in to fill a void in a very critical part of our game." BLUE BANTER: Michigan suffered no injuries in Saturday's game . . . Fullback Eddie Garrett, who missed the Miami game with a bad knee, is "very doubtful" to play in this week's game against Washington, according to Schembechler... Gerald White should be back at the tailback spot, too. "I'm satisfied with White, yes," said Schembechler. When asked about the status of last year's starting tailback, Rick Rogers, Bo said, "We'll line up Rogers in scrimmage this week and see what happens" Michigan's defense has not given up a touchdown on the ground for nine quarters, going back to the third quarter of last November's Ohio State game. A perfect football Saturday with sunny skies and a warm breeze. Once again, opening day at Michigan Stadium was filled to capacity and beyond with the usual slightly inebriated students, the faculty members and the perennial alumni, filled to the hilt from the many tailgate festivities. All were anxiously awaiting the debut of the 1984 Wolverines against the nation's highly-touted number-one Miami Hurricanes. I, too, was there like most students, suffering from Friday night's celebration. But unlike those poor hungover souls burning in the sun, I was basking in my first view from Michigan's press box. Surprisingly, from my 40-yard line seat in the box, directly above a block of my sorority sisters, not a nook nor a cranny was blocked from my vision. The whole Daily football beat was excited to finally really "SEE" a whole game. But half the fun of this amazing panorama was in the pre-game itself, when there was time to enjoy the details. As the 105,403 of you streamed into the bleachers, the conversation in parts of the massive press box centered around how long before the ever-popular "Wave" started. Surprisingly, it wasn't until 12:45 p.m. when a dozen or so students on the 30-yard line finally got the thing going :- and it was quite a sight to behold. It was a masterpiece indeed, looping the stadium several times before the alumni fizzled out. Unlike boxy Tiger Stadium and the like, the oval confines that house the Maize and Blue battles are a perfect haven for Wave execution. As the band took the field, the' fans really got into the true spirit of Michigan football. The bodies blurred into a gigantic mass after a while, but when the band played the fight song, those bodies became a sea of raised right arms when every "hail" was sung. For that first "Hail to The Victors" of the season, not a fan was left sitting. A fine performance by all - Bravo! In many ways, it was very obvious that it was the season premiere. The usually frustrated "adults" who so naively bought scalped student tickets, were lessons in the art of futility as they fought for the numbered seat of their ticket. These people should know by now that they're lucky if they even get in their section, let alone their very own seat. And those silly few that stroll in after kickoff. . . well hang it up! But don't worry, they'll soon learn that there are certain sections of the stadium owned and operated by students - no questions asked! It is quite easy to tell which sections are students and which are alumni (at least from my vantage point). It is a subtle, yet noticeable change. Alumni sections are pale. Their clothes are pastel, the students' bright. Their hair is graying, the students' blend into a young shade of dark brown. And above all, the alumni obviously have spent the entire summer indoors. All this flew by me in a matter of moments. Before I knew it the "Go Blue" banner was aised and the brand new, untested 105th version of the Michigan Wolverines came streaming out of the tunnel for the 57th time. During Miami's first possession, my heart was in my throat. The Hurriances seemed to be toying with Michigan, having no problem moving the ball. That is until sophomore Doug Mallory turned the tables with a much-needed interception. In the midst of the rather boring press box, I couldn't help but get caught up in the emotion of the moment and I cheered (not all that loud) along with the fans. A few moments later, it was announ- ced that according to a conference rule, there was to be no cheering in the press box. It was hard, but I did keep a reign on my emotions as I silently rooted the Wolverines to victory. After all, I wasn't doing the cover, just a sidebar. Even though the seats are great, and you can see plays unfold like never before seen in the stands, I found that I missed being down in the sweltering crowds of students where there are no laws against cheering, or waving, or drinking. Believe it or not!!!! I Daily Photo by CAROL L. FRANCAVILLA Sophomore punter Monte Robbins drops the ball for one of his seven punts Saturday against Miami.
