Best Dance Bar Dooley 's So get your back up off the wall - By Dan Desmond IF YOU THINK it's taking too damn long for Indiana Jones to swash- buckle his way back to the screen then Romancing the Stone could be just the surrogate you need. Certainly, it's a not-so-discrete thievery of that furious favorite, Raiders of The Lost Ark, but that's o.k. And, sure, it presents a completely inevitable love story, and the bad guys are, of course, no match for poetic justice. That's alright, too, because Romancing the Stone is swift, suspen- seful, reckless, and besides that, it's a. lot of fun. The film opens in New York where we are introduced to Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner), a novelist who writes the type of books you see near the supermarket checkout line with words like "savage love," or "lust" in the titles. She has a cat named Romeo and has created a fictional romantic male paradigm named "Jesse," but dubs herself a hopeful romantic. Discovering that urban fellows fall short of her ideal, she finds vicarious adventure and passion through her novels. Dissolve to Columbia where Wilder's sister Elaine (Mary Ellen Trainor) fin- ds out that there are no child terrorist laws and is kidnapped by a pint-sized abductor. She is taken to a New York thug who has temporarily relocated in Columbia in search of a treasure. The map that leads to this dowry, however, has been sent to Joan Wilder, who must deliver it to South America to save her sister-in-distress. As ,our heroine touches down in Columbia a full moon greets her, but will it symbolize romance or lunacy? It's lunacy first. This is anything but a travel ad. Columbia is portrayed as a savage place where pigs and chickens ride with the peasants on mud-blotched buses. One of the New York henchmen, Ralph (Danny DeVito), paints the whole pic- ture when he rabidly deems Columbia a "third-world toilet." Though the beauty of the bright green jungle foliage can- not be overlooked, the sinister always lurks in the underbrush in the form of snakes, crocodiles, and villains. To Wilder's good fortune, she hooks up with an adventurer named Jack T. Colton ("T" for "trustworthy," says he) played by Michael Douglas. As the two tread down a rough jungle road together Colton, toting only the essen- tials of survival, contrasts hilariously with Wilder, who pulls her luggage-on- wheels over the puddled and bumpy terrain. Inevitably, the full moon that welcomed Joan to South America begins to project some romantic light on the pair. Colton's practicality produces no smiles from Wilder as he machetes her high heels from her shoes and she pouts, "they were Italian." After that traumatic initiation, they set out together to seek the treasure them- selves, which leads them to places with romantically ominous names like "the Devil's Fork." Their romp through the jungle enter- tains the viewer every step, slide, or swing of the way. They confront just Ulrich's: The Source. For school, for business, for fun-Ulrich's has it all.
