Evita Michigan Theater 8 p.m., Thursday & Friday, April 26 & 27 By Tracy Uselmann 0 USIDE,the Michigan Theater looks like a local cinema. But if the average person walking down Liberty Street stretches his curiosity, he will discover a huge room with an im- mensely winding staircase. The stair- case follows the plush carpet and unen- ding mirrors up to one of the largest theaters in Ann Arbor-seating 1900 people. These days the theater is preparing for the international, award- winning Broadway rmusical Evita, ap- pearing at the end of April. Evita is based on Eva Peron's rise Juan Peron: Wolfe knows the nose from a poverty-ridden, small-town girl, to Argentina's idol, the powerful wife of Dictator Juan Peron. Peron did many good things for people while she used ATETO =ii_ _ - the media to establish herself as an Argentinian heroine. This musical, directed by Hal Prince, will feature many of the original Broadway cast. Florence Lacey, as Eva Peron, starred in the role on Broadway and has also appeared on the national tour for the last two years. She has one of the best voices in today's musical theater and never cheats vocally.- Tim Bowman, who originated the role of Che in the Los Angeles company, went on to play the broadway role. Also John Leslie Wolfe, who will play Juan. Peron, is an original member of the Broadway cast. The cast is comprised of 34 members. The basic set consists of four 30-foot towers of welded steel. Lights and screens will be hung from these towers for projecting film clips which will help to unfold the story. An interesting stage effect will be the nose of Juan Peron. Wolfe has 15 noses backstage to make him look more like the Argentine president. He has a special latex nose applied for every performance. The lyrics for Evita are by Tim Rice and the music is by Andrew Lloyd Web- ber, the same duet which produced Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. Evita is the winner of seven Tony awards including Best Musical. The citizens of Ann Arbor will have the opportunity to once again see the same broadway cast perform on April 26 and 27 at the Michigan Theater. The performances begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $23.50, $20.50 and $14.50 and are available at the Manager's office (in- side the Theater). Call 668-8397 for more information.
