The Michigan Daily - Friday, April 13, 1984 -Page 9 Kazoo finds some good friends ,y Anne Valdespino THIS Saturday, for their Annual 0nefit Concert, the Comic Opera Guild esents Kazoophony, a New York troupe hell-bent on establishing the Kazoo as the newest instrument for per- forming the "classics." According to Guild manager Thomas Petiet, "Comedy and music are our life, so a lot of both is really living." This is Ann Arbor's chance to enjoy the latest in Classical Music Comedy. A genre founded by Marx Brothers, Chico and Harpo, and continued through the an- tics of pianist Victor Borga, this type of entertainment pleases wide audiences today. S'old-out houses celebrate the work of Peter Schickele's "P.D.Q. Bach" orchestra, and long-time favorite Anna Russell-the only soprano in the world who can explain Wagner's Ring Cycle (a series of mammoth operas that take nearly a week to perform) in less then 15 nmnutes. The origin of the The Kazoo Company is somewhat dubious. Although they claim to be from Ludakravia (a mysterious country in which everyone is named Kaminsky but no one is related), it is highly suspected that the .members actually met at the Eastman School of Music. These seven musicians decided to form an ensemble after being accidently locked in a prac- tice room for several hours. Of course, each sports prestigious credentials. Feodor matriculated from the "Kazooliard" School of Music. Natasha was the favorite pupil of Yehudi Kazoodi, and Boris, the lowest base kazoophonist in the world, is a former test-pilot for Bazooka Bubble- gum Incorporated. The ensemble wasn't always this in- timate. Originally the National Or- chestra of Ludakravia, it was once an 80 piece affair before Arts Council budget cuts. Now the group consists of five (that is seven with two missing or whoever feels like showing up). Audiences can expect a gala event. At Alice Tully Hall in New York city, performers dressed for the occassion, appearing in white ties, tails and bare feet. And they had prepared a program to match. From their long and tacky repertoire list they produced a virtuosic solo, "Plight of the Kazoomblebee," the "New York City Fight Song"(a work which honors the tradition of violence in sports by continuing it in music), and the well-known ballet for Kazoo "Swine Lake." The ensemble brought the house down with their expert rendition of the "1813 Overture," a battle piece by Peter Illegitimus Kaminsky. During the performance audiencemembers were asked to simulate cannons by shouting "boom!" in appropriate and inappropriate places. One of the upcoming and highly innovative kazoos of Kazoophony. With the help of Lady Gay Spanker - a domineering, yet delightful, hor- seriding huntress, who "loves a good game" - Charles manages to lure his father away from Grace on the preten- se of eloping with Lady Gay. This little ploy meets with some life threatening problems, though, as Lady Gay's usually submissive husband, Dolly Sp- anker, hears of the plan and challenges Sir Harcourt to a duel. I will not say what happens next, but one thing's for sure, the laughter didn't stop until the play did. The cast of London Assurance is as talented as it is lengthy. Playing the parts of Grace Harkaway and Charles Courtly are Margaret Massman and Richard Schmidt, respectively. A scene between them, when they are both ren- dered sightless (Grace without her glasses for vanity's sake, and Charles forced to wear a pair of specs he cannot see through as a disguise), talking to walls instead of each other, and knocking over everything in the room, left the audience chuckling heartily. As Cool, Sir Harcourt's valet, Gary Garrison was just that. His sarcastic undertones and irreverent attitude toward his wealthy (superiors?) en- deared him to the audience more than any other character, (except maybe Dazzle, but I'll get to him later.) From then on nothing was the same! k NF j p'F y 7Y elightsG husband Dolly made a delightful pair. From the moment she stepped on stage, Marisha Czernik as Ms. Spanker, seemed to take control and from then on she could be expected to pick up the pace of every scene she was in. Her counterpart, Dolly Spanker (Jeff Schneiter), with his "Booboo"-like mannerisms was a wonderful com- pliment as he struggled out statements, always fed to him from someone else, as if the mere sound of his own voice was enough to frighten him. Now to the unexpected star. Dazzle (Gregg Henry), Charlie's friend, was ridiculously deceittful as he sponged off of everyone in sight by claiming relation through "distant audience relatives...Adam and Eve." And in the end, when he is found-out and asked about his true identity, he replies, "I don't know myself." He has been lying for so long. The rest of the cast, too lengthy to mention, are not without talent; although there were a few stumbles here and there, it in no way interrupted the flow of the play and all are to be commended for their performances. London Assurance continues through the 15th, with a curtain time of 8 p.m. for all shows, except the Sunday 2 p.m. matinee. Tickets are available through the PTP Ticket Office in the Michigan League.
