Huron 761-8845 ANN ARBOR By MIKE MCGRAW Some of the greatest efforts in the history of Michigan football belong to the defense. Whether it is holding its opponents out of the endzone for 23 straight quar- ters or shutting down the powerful wishbone offense of the Auburn Tigers in the Sugar Bowl, the Wolverine defen- se has always been there when the of- fense broke down to keep the ballgame close. AND NEXT SEASON the defenders will have their work cut out for them because on the opposite side of the scorecard, Michigan will be led by an inexperienced quarterback who is working behind an untested offensive line. The possibility of some early- season, low-scoring efforts by the Blue team definitely exists. The Wolverine defense entered spring practice without linebackers Tom Hassell and Carlton Rose and safety Evan Cooper, three key mem- bers of last year's talented squad in both leadership and ability. But as long as Bo Schembechler is coaching, you know that the Michigan defense will on- ce again be near the top of the con- ference. "Defensively, we lost three main guys and they will be hard to replace," said Schembechler. "The linebackers will be the key. We have some good guys but they have to put it together." THE STRENGTH OF next year's unit will be the line, which returns intact. Al Sincich will'be back to start at nose guard for the fourth straight year and will be flanked in Michigan's 3-4 setup by seniors Kevin Brooks and Mike Hammerstein and fifth-year players Vince DeFelice and Dave Meredith. "Sincich is one of the toughest kids that has played here. He's a great kid, tough as nails," said Schembechler. "To be successful, most odd defenses need size in the middle. But we line up at angles to the offensive line, so we get away with using a smaller guy in there." PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS MANAGERS!
