The Michigan Daily - Thursday, April 12, 1984 - Page 9 SENIOR NE TTER SET TO GO OUT IN STYLE Naft finds fresh motivation By PHIL NUSSEL Juliet Naft's senior year on the women's tennis team can be described Stith several well-known cliches: "Going out in style," "Finishing with a bang," or even "Rags to riches." No matter which saying is used, they all mean the same thing when applied to the senior co-captain - this year's Juliet Naft is much different from the one of past years. NAFT, a native of Glencoe, Ill., is playing third singles and first doubles this season after a relatively dismal junior year of shuttling around in doubles with different partners nearly Continued from Preceding Page HELP WANTED RUST SUMMER CAMP STAFF POSITIONS Camp Tamakwa in Algonquin Park, Ontario, has openings for the following positions: Male and Female Counselors, Canoe Guides, Arts & Crafts Director, Swim Director, Sailing Director, Windsur- fing Director, and Piano Player. Editorial and Typing Service 996-0566 every match. This season Naft is healthy; last season she was constantly hampered by a nagging foot injury. This season, for some reason, Naft is having a good time playing tennis. "I've enjoyed it this year," she said. "I've been playing competitive tennis for so long that for a while it really became like a job. I wasn't bored, but it would get to the point where it was work and I would have to say, 'Oh God, here comes another match, I've got to get psyched. "TO ME, it's more like a game this year. I really want to go out there and play. I have a much better attitude, a fresher attitude. It's different." Coach Ollie Owens, as well as Naft's doubles partner Paula Reichert, both have observed this turnaround. "She's like a completely different player," Owens said. Reichert remarked, "She is more aggressive and motivated. I don't know where it came from but it (the motivation) is there." OWENS GAVE several reasons for Naft's changes. "She's ready to play everytime she goes out there," he noted. "She has more confidence in her backhand, and overall she's really been going for it. Tennis has been a more important part of her life this year." Naft, who is 14-8 in singles, believes that she really does want to "go out" with a bang." She said, "It's my last year and I want to play great. This year I was excited. I didn't have any in- juries going into the season. "I was really psyched to play for some reason. I didn't feel that way during the summer, but in August I got re-motivated and I've really been psyched to play." ALTHOUGH NAFT has a better record in singles than in doubles, she believes that her strongpoint is in doubles. Owens barely has to coach the team of Naft and Reichert because of Naft's knowledge of the game. He said, "She knows doubles better than anyone on this team." Naft and Reichert, although slum- ping a bit lately to a 7-9 record overall, have all the aspects of a good doubles team. The two balance each other with Naft's power and Reichert's consisten- cy. "I'm the hot dogger and she's the stable, steady baseline," Naft noted. "Her strengths are my weaknesses and my strengths are her weaknesses." AS FAR AS HER singles game goes, Naft herself has trouble describing it. She often adapts her game to what kind of opponent she meets by going from serve and volley to a baselining strategy. "I can't really tell you what my game is," she said. "Ollie once said to me, 'I don't know how you win your matches.' Quite often, when tennis players reach the college level, coaches don't try to change their players' games too much. Owens is no exception. He has served, at least for Naft, as a motivator and as a strategy adviser. However, one of Naft's problems throughout her career has been her backhand. It was not a mechanical, stroke-oriented problem, it was a confidence problem and Naft attributes her backhand's im- provement this season to Owens. "He's helped and he's helped it more than once," she said. "He's been the only one that's been able to do that." OWENS HAS BEEN very pleased with his team's co-captain this year, but he admitted that she has been dif- ficult to deal with in the past. "It's been a little frustrating at times because she hasn't always been that intense and she has a lot of talent." "I do have trouble motivating myself," Naft conceded. "This year I have not had trouble motivating myself in tennis, but I don't know why that is." It seems as if the motivation problems are behind her. The many changes in Naft's character have shown she is determined to "finish with a bang" this season. TYPING - ON CAMPUS Fast turn around resumes, coverletters, disser- tations, term papers. After sweeping Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, the Wolverines host the team from the other side of the state, the Western Michigan Broncos. The 16-12 Wolverines will face an inexperienced Western squad, which returns only four starters from last year's team. The youth lies mainly in the outfield as All-Mid American Con- ference juniors Debbie Albano and Terri Sonon round out a solid infield. THE BRONCOS' real strength lies in their pitching. Returning from an in- jury-plagued season, senior Bonnie Kinne hopes to regain the form that helped her post a 17-2 record in 1982 and an impressive 0.15 ERA. The All- American hurler has notched 459 strikeouts in her three-year career. Using a sling-shot delivery rather than the conventional windmill, Kinne could be a real threat to Michigan hit- ters, who haven't seen that style of pit- ching all year. "The sling-shot will give us a different look," said Michigan head coach Bob DeCarolis. "She's pretty tough. "They're one of the favorites in the MAC. We'd really like to take them and pick up some momentum."
