The Ann Arbor Learning Network
(AALN) is a private community
educational program. This program
was formerly administered by the
University of Michigan as the U-M
Courses for Adult Education (UMCAE).
The main purpose of the Learning
Network is to administer a program of
learning activities designed to help
local individuals, groups, and

organizations to actualize their positive
potential. By sponsoring or co-
sponsoring a year-round series of
classes, workshops, films and lectures,
the Learning Network endeavors to
provide opportunities for persons to
gather together and obtain the
knowledge, skills, and guidance
necessary for growth and development
in the direction of their choice.
COURSES in this catalog are
planned and administered by the Ann
Arbor Learning Network.
ADMISSION4s open to all.
Prerequisites, if any, are stated in the
course descriptions.
COURSE FEES are the sole source of
support for this program. They are
payable in full at the time of
registration. A registration fee of $4.00
is charged to each person once each
term (not once for each course).
TEXTBOOKS AND SUPPLIES are
required for some courses and
recommended for others. Specific

instructions about materials or books
will be given either at the time of
registration or at the first class session,
whichever is appropriate.
REDUCED FEES: When
specifically indicated in the course
description, individuals may be
admitted atone half the full tuition if (1)
they are over 65 or (2) they are second
or additional members of a family unit
registering in the same course. Only
one reduced fee plan may be applied per
course. Each individual must pay a
$4.00 registration fee.
SCHEDULE CHANGES or
postponement of classes is sometimes
unavoidable. In such cases every
attempt is made to notify you by
telephone or letter. If in doubt about
your class schedule, inquire at the
AALN office.
NO GRADES are given for these
courses. A letter, however, verifying
your enrollment in a course will be
issued if requested before the end of that
course.

REFUNDS: After the first session,
the full course fee is refunded if your
notification of withdrawal reaches us
before the start of the second session.
After the second session, 50% of the
course fee is refunded if your.
notification of withdrawal reaches us
before the start of the third session.
There are no refunds given after the
start of the third session of any class.
AALN does not refund: (1) the $4.00
registration fee in withdrawal cases, (2)
course fees for withdrawals from single
session or weekend programs when
notification of withdrawal reaches us
less than 72 hours prior to the beginning
session, (3) course fees for withdrawls
from programs that last three sessions
or less after they are half over, or (4)
sums of less than $2.00. Processing of
refunds takes approximately six
weeks.
CANCELLATION: If enrollment is
insufficient to justify continuing a
course, a full refund of course fee and
registration fee is made.

across foundation assets, how to move
into fixed and variable assets, and even
how to position yourself for speculation.
Includes techniques for researching
investments: reading the financial
page, prospectuses and memoranda,
market letters, and so on.

IRA'S: Everyone's
Tax Shelter

8% or less. Find out why. Learn how to
pack some "investment punch" into
this popular long-term retirement
vehicle and cash in on the million
dollars that should be yours.
1908. 1 session. $12. (Campus Area) W
7-9 p.m. (May 16).

Instructors: G. Phil Zepeda and John
R. Gill. See The Beginning Investor

Tax Shelters and Tax Free
Income for Everyone
For more sophisticated investors or
individuals who find that their high
income or "bracket creep" forces them
to seriously consider tax-reduction
strategies.
Session one covers the broad
categories of available shelters broken
into low, medium, and high risk. It goes
on to deal with legal strategies investors
can employ to shift, defer, transfer, or
reduce taxes through uses of trusts,
gifts, interest-free loans, and other
creative approaches.
Session two introduces specific
investments as tools for trimming tax
liability. Discussion includes: "due
diligence"; measuring tax risk;
varieties of programs (e.g., in the
drilling, developmental, and income
areas); real-estate limited
partnerships; and equipment leasing.

College Financial Planning
Designed for middle and upper-
middle income parents of college-bound
students. Focuses on financial methods
for meeting the ever-increasing costs of
higher education.
Session one covers projecting college
costs and identifying, explaining, and
evaluating classic investment vehicles
and strategies for meeting those costs.
Topics include: Uniform Gifts to
Minors, intra-family interest-free
demand loans, short-term trusts, and
investments that can most fully utilize
the planning potential of these different
strategies.
Session two focuses on how parents
can structure their finances to better
qualify for need-based financial aid for
their college-bound children. Emphasis
is placed on understanding the
financial aid process, why the classic
planning vehicles previously covered
may make it more difficult to qualify for
financial aid, and what strategies are
best suited to deal with this problem.
Attention to relating college financial
planning to a family's overall financial
planning is also featured.
1910.2 sessions. $24. Reduced fees
apply. (Campus Area) M 7-9 p.m. (May
7-14).
Instructors: G. Phil Zepeda and John
R. Gill. See The Beginning Investor

Artistic Expression
SPRING CREATIVITY-
SPECIAL
For those electing to take all three of
our Saturday creativity workshops, the
course fee for the series is $100. Taken
individually, the course fee is $40 for
each. Workshops in the series are:
Rea wakening Imagination: Breaking
the Creative Block, Drawing on the
Right Side of the Brain, and Writing
from the Right Side of the Brain, all
taught by Kay Gould-Caskey.
Reawakening Imagnation:
Breaking the Creative Block
Discover the unlimited imaginative
potential within and experience the joy
and excitement of learning how to
develop and use it. The process, which
uses various visual, tactile, auditory
and meditative techniques, is both
simple and fun. The "block-busting"
excercises employed are the keys for
opening the doors that reveal
previously undiscovered or little used
pathways to your elusive hidden core of
creative genius.
Bring lined and unlined paper and a
box of crayons or colored pencils or
markers.
A114. 1session. $40. Reduced fees
apply. If elected with A115 and R1809,
the course fee for all three is $100,
(Campus Area) Sat. 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
(May 5).
Instructor: Kay Gould-Caskey,
owner/director of the Center for
Creative Pursuits, conducts classes
and workshops throughout the Mid.
West, promoting creative living,
increased personal potential, and
expanded awareness. She has a Fine
Arts degree from U-M and a certificate
from the Arthur Ford Institute of
Parapsychology in Miami, Florida. She
has served as an interpretive art
consultant to psychologists and has
been teaching art and helping people
break through creative blocks since
1971.

Drawing On The Right Side
of the Brain
Have you always wanted to draw, but
felt you couldn't? Here is the class that
helps you to fulfill that desire. You
learn how to release and develop the
creative potential within.
Students are encouraged to shift
from the symbol-oriented, left-brain
mode to the spatially perceptive,
image-oriented, right-brain mode.
Exercises and techniques designed
specifically to facilitate this shift are
introduced and implemented. The
exercises include deep breathing
relaxation, blind contour drawing,
negative-positive drawing, tactile
drawing, and music drawing.
Employing these techniques, you learn
how to see as one must in order to draw
successfully. Your improvement and
development as an artist are dramatic
and exciting.
Bring either a No. 2 pencil or a No. 4B
drawing pencil and a pad of inexpensive
drawing paper to the first class.
A115. 2 sessions. $40. Reduced fees
apply. If elected with A114 and R1809,
the course fee for all three is $100.
(Campus Area) Sat. 1-4 p.m. (May 19
and June 2).
Instructor: Kay Gould-Caskey. See
Reawakening Imagination (A114) for
more details.
