"We played a lot better defense and kept them off the boards. The Wolverines won the battle of the boards, too, 34-31. McCormick snared 14 and Tarpley grabbed eight. The Irish sophomore with the Roy Tarpley build burned Michigan with 6-for-10 shooting, a perfect six free throws and eight rebounds before he fouled out. Kempton scored most of his points after the out- come had been decided. The tournament victory was Michigan's first outside of its home state. Before last night, the Wolverines had not won a holiday tournament on foreign turf. Michigan finished its season at 23-10. Notre Dame returned home with a 21-12 mark. The Wolverines will take a mon- th-and-a-half off to celebrate before preparation begins for the 1984-85 cam- paign. Michigan will tour Europe in mid-May. The celebration began with 41 secon- ds left in the contest. Irish coach Digger Phelps conceded defeat and emptied his bench. Freider followed suit. Every Wolverine played with the exception of Paul Jokish, who was left kneeling at the scoreres table when time expired. Following the game, the Michigan players hoisted Freider on their shoulders as he cut down the net at the north end of the arena. The players took turns clipping the mesh at the south end. There was plenty of hand-slapping, shouting and family photography sessions before the awards presen- tation. In addition to the individual trophies, Frieder received a trip for two courtesy of TWA airlines. He'll need a vacation after this long season. "If that had been a Big Ten team we would have been down twenty instead of up two," said Frieder of Michigan's first-half performance. "McCormick and (Butch) Wade were good on the boards. We missed far too many layups. A couple of our guys would rather be fancy than good." Michigan came out of the locker room looking like NIT champions. The Wolverines methodically built a lead behind the strong play of McCormick. The 6-11 senior ran up twelve points and kept Irish bruiser Tim Kempton out of the lne. McCormick hit two jumpers and a two-hand dunk to give Michigan an 18- 10 lead midway through the first half. Notre Dame rallied, however, when Big Mac rested on the bench. The South Bend, Ind. school rattled off six straight points to whittle an eight-point Michigan lead down to a 26-23 margin. After Joubert buried a jumper for Michigan, Kempton scored the final three points of the half when he tipped in an Iris miss and was fouled. His sub- sequent free-throw brought the score to 28-26. w r McCormick ... MVP performance Softballers split Special to the Daily COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The state of Texas is known for being the home of big things, and the Michigan softball team made itself right at home on the first day of its spring trip in the Lone Star State by coming up with a big victory against number-four ranked Texas A&M yesterday, 5-4. The Wolverines took advantage of some sloppy Aggie play to account for their first four runs. Michigan scored on two wild pitches, a passed ball andan error to take a 4-1 lead. Then catcher Leslie Bean tripled in the final tally for the team in the fifth. TEXAS A&M came back to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh with two out, the last two runs being produced by a single by Birmingham native Ann Hadley. But Michigan hurler Linda Allen retired the next Aggie batter to clinch the victory. Huron 761-8845 ANN ARBOR By BRAD MORGAN While a 12th-place finish in a 14 team field might not excite most coaches, Michigan golf coach Jim Carras found a lot to be excited about after his team finished in that position last week in the Southern Florida Invitational. "I was really happy because five of the 14 teams were ranked in the top 20, and all but Ohio State and Michigan State were from the south," said Carras. "This was easily the best field we'll face all year," he added. MICHIGAN'S five-man score of 926 placed them well behind the University of Florida's winning total of 862, but that didn't bother Carras. "We came down here hoping for good individual efforts, and the fact that we shot as well as we expected is a plus," he noted. Medalist honors for Michigan went to sophomore Chris Westfall who shot a trio of 75's for a three-day total of 225. Junior Dan Roberts, an All-Big Ten performer last year, followed with a score of 78-72-79-229. ROUNDING OUT Michigan's five- marl squad were Terry Porvin and Peter Salvarino, both shooting 239, and Ken Clark, who totalled 240. Carras said that while Westfall won this tournament, Roberts is the man to watch this year. "He was All-Big Ten last. year and went to the NCAAs, and he should be able to get a return ticket there this year," he said. As for this season's Big Ten race, Carras sees Ohio State as the team to beat. The Buckeyes are currently ranked sixth nationally, but they will receive stiff competition from Indiana, Purdue, and possibly Michigan. "We're gonna do our best to win this, but if we can finish in the top three, that would be a tribute to our kids," he said. "We're going to have to play well to do that, though. "I want to keep improving each year I'm coach," he said. "The stroke- average required to make this year's team was lower, so we're better this year than last."
