a Page 12 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 23, 1984 Blue victorious, 63-62 (Continued from Page 1) on the shooting of Antoine Joubert. The freshman from Detroit scored a career high 18 points. XAVIER was able to narrow the lead by halftime but then in the second half Michigan went into a zone defense enabling them to spread the gap. "They were quicker than us except for maybe Eric Turner so it gave us problems in who McCormick oraWade could cover," explained Frieder. The zone defense and some Roy Tar- pley shots inside spruced Michigan's lead up to 54-43 with just over eight minutes left in the game and you could hear the crowd humming a few verses of New York, New York. BUT XAVIER rudely stopped Michigan's early celebration, especially its star player, Jeff Jenkins. The Musketeer center, who finished with a game high 21 points, pulled his team back within two, 58-56 with just two minutes left. After McCormick nailed a free throw and then Xavier's Victor Fleming threw up a prayer, it looked as if the Wolverines had its third straight NIT win in the bag. But, then shades of Northwestern flashed through everyone's mind when Tarpley missed an easy layup that could have finally stabbed the Musketeers. Dexter Bailey scored an inside bucket for Xavier at 1:04 to make the score 59-58.. After both teams traded baskets, Joubert sank two free throws putting Michigan ahead 63-60 with just :21 seconds left. Jenkins hit a jumper to make the score 63-62 but only after Xavier had run the clock down to :02 seconds. Now, the game was finally over and as Xavier coach Bob Staak called his team, "the Rats" were put in the gutter while Michigan goes to the glitter. The Wolverines will now play the winner of the Virginia Tech and Ten- nessee game on Monday in Madison Square Garden, one step away from the finals. Certainly, that is a quantum leap for a team that lost 20 games just two seasons ago. 0 I Next stop, New York MICHIGAN MinFG/AFT/A Rellford ........... 14 2/6 0/0 McCormick ....... 34 2/4 9/11 Tarpley........... 35 6/13 4/4 Joubert............37 6/13 6/6 Turner ............29 2/7 0/2 Wade.............. 27 2/6 4/4 Pelekoudas........17 0/1 0/0 Henderson....... 1 0/0 0/0 Rockymore........6 0/1 0/0 Team rebounds....
