The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 23, 1984 - Page 11 Fourth Annual DAILY Hockey Poll II Fali _ By JIM DAVIS NCE AGAIN the Central Collegiate Hockey froAssociation coaches have taken a time-out from practice and recruiting to cast their votes in the Daily CCHA hockey poll. All eleven teams returned ballots in the poll. The CCHA will be proudly represented by regular-season champ Bowling Green and tournament victor Michigan State in the Final Four of college hockey at Lake Placid this weekend. Members of these two teams captured or shared honors in nine categories in the poll. For the first time, the Wolverines did not win in any category, somewhat indicative of the disappointing season for Michigan fans. Best Playmaker Smartest player Best on Face-offs PAUL POOLEY Ohio State The nation's leading scorer finished the regular season with 32 goals and 63 assists, and since has tied the overall CCHA scoring record for a single season. The Buckeye captain from Ontario also shared hardest worker honors with Kelly Miller of Michigan State, and received votes in seven of 12 categories he was eligible for. Best Stickhandler JOHN SAMANSKI Bowling Green Fil during the Falcons' regular season. The senior moved up to eighth place on BG's all-time scoring honor roll with over 160 career points. Best Skater BILL TERRY, DAN KANE Michigan Tech, Bowling Green Terry, one of the most decorated players in Daily poll history, and Kane each received four votes from the league coaches. The Tech forward has won the Daily award in each of two previous seasons, and last year took stickhandler honors. Kane, a junior, was named a first-team CCHA selection by the coaches. Most Colorful Most Accurate Shot DAN DORIAN Western Michigan Of all the overwhelming surprises of the CCHA season, Dorian was probably the biggest on offense. The sophomore right winger poured into opposing nets a league-high 41 goals (along with 50 assists), and established a phenomenal record by scoring in 44 consecutive contests over two seasons. The streak was broken in the CCHA finals against MSU. Like Pooley, Dorian received votes in seven of 12 categories. Most Underrated KELLY MILLER Michigan State The junior from Lansing, a ninth-round selection of the New York Rangers in the 1982 NHL draft, is considered one of the top all- around players in the league. He finished the regular season with 27 goals and is one of the main reasons the Spartans are playing in the college hockey championships this weekend. Hardest Worker PAUL POOLEY KELLY MILLER Ohio State, Michigan State Nine different players received recognition in this category, with Pooley and Miller each receiving two votes. Both served as captains with their respective teams this season. Miller was named on at least one ballot in five categories. Pooley now holds the CCHArall-time assist record, and tied Brian Hills record of 270 career points. Best Penalty Killer TOM ANASTOS Michigan State The junior right wing is one of the best defensive players in the league. Aided by his 6-3, 190 frame, Anastos was able to score 22 goals, including 7 shorthanded goals to tie for the league lead. The Spartans scored at least one shorthanded goal in 17 of the 19 series this season. Four other Spartans received one vote in this category. Best Defensive Defenseman DAVE ELLETT, WAYNE WILSON Bowling Green DAN McFALL, DAVE TAYLOR Michigan State These four players, two Spartans and two Falcons, each received two votes from the league coaches, proving that excellent defense does not go unrecognized. Northern's Bill Schafhauser, Ferris State's Jim File, and Rob Renner of Miami received one vote each. McFall was a first-team All-CCHA selection, while the coaches named Ellett and File to the second team. Hardest Shot JIM FILE Ferris State Two years ago File won this award, but it was snapped up by MSU's Mark Hamway last season. Now File regains the honor, having been named on five ballots. File scored 11 goals from his point position and added 38 assists last season. The senior is the Bulldog's all-time goal- scoring blueliner. Best Rookie BILL SHIBICKY Michigan State Shibicky edged three other players by being named on three ballots. The freshman forward from Burnaby, B.C. tallied 16 goals, including ten on the power play, and 30 assists to highlight a fine crop of first-year talent for the Spartans. Best Goalie NORM FOSTER Michigan State Another key Spartan freshman, Foster registered a 3.03 goals-against-average and .894 save percentage in league play. The Vancouver native teamed with fellow rookie Bob Essensa to help MSU fans forget All-American goalie Ron Scott, now with the New York Rangers. Coach-of-the-Year BILL WILKINSON, JERRY YORK Western Michigan, Bowling Green Wilkinson's surprising Broncos finished fifth in regular season play in the CCHA and unexpectedlysreached the league finals before bowing to the Spartans. York led his BG squad to its third consecutive CCHA title and to the championship tournament of college hockey, to be played this weekend. Both coaches received four votes.
