The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, March 20, 1984- Page 9 Warriors wasted, 83-70 (Continued from Page 1) who scored 11 points. Good thing for the Wolverines that they made' the late run because Marquette came fighting back, out- scoring Michigan 9-2 at the start of the second stanza. The Warriors pulled within two but could never get over the hump. Michigan withstood the Warrior onslaught and then methodically sent the Warrior's NIT championship hoses back to Milwaukee. "Every time they made a run, we responded," said Frieder. "I thought we played just an outstanding game." The key may have been the Wolverines turnaround at the free- throw stripe. They hit just 5-of-11 in the first half but 20-of-27 in the second. Why the big difference? "I TOOK it (foul shooting) at half- time," Frieder joked. "My assistant was in control in the first half so then I took over." Minutes later, Frieder was informed that Michigan would ot Xavier on Thur- sday if it beat Nebraska. At the time the game was deadlocked with five minutes left. "Now I gotta go coach Xavier," Frieder moaned. Frieder must have done the job because the Musketeers pulled out a one-point win and gave Michigan the home-court edge so crucial in tour- nament play. "THAT'S what we need," said a jubilant Rellford when informed of the Xavier-Nebraska outcome. "We'll ber there." "I really feel good about playing at home," added Joubert. "Anytime we can play here it's a big advantage ... we play with a lot of confidence here. I think we can beat North Carolina here." While Joubert may be a bit over- exuberant, the Wolverines are definitely playing good ball now. Like last Thursday's 94-70 shellacking over Wichita State, they ran whenever the opportunity presented itself. Though Warrior -coach Rick Majerus did not make the same mistake the Shockers did by pressing the Wolverines, his team was not afraid to go end-to-end with Michigan. "I think they wanted to push it uF. when they could," said Erick Turner, who was relatively quiet with 11 points but committed only two turnovers. "But we like to run too, I enjoy running any chance we get." You can bet the Wolverines will try to continue to move it up against Xavier this Thursday. And if they play that game like the last two, the Wolverines may run right ito a spot in final four at New York next and Wednesday. the NIT Monday Two down, three to go MARQUETTE MinFG/A FT/A MICHIGAN MinFG/A FT/A McCormick ....... 38 7/9 7/10 Relford...........18 6/12 1/1 Tarpley.......... 3 5/12 4/6 Joubert...........28 4/9 3/5 Turner............ 40 4/10 3/7 Pelekoudas.........22 0/0 2/3 Wade.............. 15 3/5 3/9 Rudy ............1 0/0 2/2 Team Rebounds ... 'M'scalped, 10=9 Special to the Daily EDINBURGH, Texas - A wild time was had by the Michigan baseball team yesterday in the third game of its spring trip to Texas - especially by the pitchers. Three Wolverine hurlers walked and hit eight Bradley batters in the fourth and fifth innings. Each of them scored and the Braves from Peoria, Ill. had urned a 6-0 Michigan lead into a 10-6 efecit, then hung on to post a 10-9 vic- tory. THE WOLVERINES came back with two in the bottom of the sixth when with two out, Mike Watters doubled down the left field line and first baseman Ken Hayward drove his second home run of the season over the right field fence. Then sophomore Casey Close hit another four-bagger leading off the seventh, but Bradley was able to get the rest of the side out in order to preserve the win. - Michigan got off to a big lead in the second as Rich Bair and Close singled to lead off the inning. Then Matt Shuta singled following a walk to Kurt Zim- merman to score Bair from third. Freshman Rob Huffman beat out an in- field hit, scoring Close and Barry Larkin followed with a single to right on which Zimmerman scored but Shuta was thrown out at the plate.-. After Watters walked, Hayward drove in two more runs with a bases- loaded single. The Wolverine: added another run in the third to mount the 6-0 advantage. The game marked the opening of the Jody Ramsey Tournament hosted, by Pan American University. Michigan, now 1-2 on the season, battles Bradley again today at 2:00p.m. By JIM DWORMAN Basketball season will not end with the NIT for the Michigan Wolverines. Coach Bill Frieder will take his team on a 17-day, seven-game trip to Europe this spring. The Wolverines will tour four nations and play against three national teams. "THIS HAS been in planning for some time now," said Frieder. "We made a trip 10 years ago and we just thought this was a good time to try again with the players that we have. I'd like to go to Europe every six years or so." Michigan will leave Ann Arbor May 1 and arrive in Luxemburg one day later. From there the Wolverines will travel to the Netherlands, where they will face the national team in four games May 5- 8. Next on the itinerary is a stop in West Germany for a May 9 match against that nation's team. Michigan's final destination is Athens, Greece, for two games against the Greek national team. THE WOLVERINES will return to Ann Arbor May 17. Frieder said the trip would be at the expense of the host nations. "We're the guests of those respective countries," he said. "They're going to pick up the brunt of it (the cost). We've got to get our airfare." THE TOUR, plans for which are not yet finalized, is being arranged through the Amateur Basketball Association of the U.S. Big Ten co-champions Purdue and Illinois took similar European trips last summer. Frieder said the trip will give his team the chance to play extra games against good competition. He added that the national teams of West Ger- many and the Netherlands probably will play at the Los Angeles Olym- pics. All of Michigan's returning players, and possibly graduating senior Dan Pelekoudas, will make the trip. Daily Photo by CAROL L.
