"I most definitely feel that they should be in the NCAA if it were a different structure (less automatic bids). " Rellford scored 10 of the Wolverines' first 18 points to give Frieder's club a 10-point lead with 11:46 remaining in the first half. From that point on it was the Tarpley show as the center from Detroit Cooley went into the locker room with an astounding 23 points. The Wolverines shot 60 percent in the first half and built a 49-28 lead. ON DEFENSE, Michigan held Missouri Valley Conference player-of- the-year Xavier McDaniel to 16 points, five below his average. The junior forward was impressed by Michigan but felt that the game might have turned out differently had it been played in Wichita. "I knew they were tough when we watched the films," McDaniel said. "But there are five teams in our conference, us, Illinois State, Tulsa, Creighton, and Bradley, that these guys would have trouble with on the road." The only tense moment in the game with 5:12 remaining when Michigan's Robert Henderson and Shocker center Tom Kosich exchanged punches, leading to the ejection of both players. The game was played before the smallest Crisler crowd of the year. But the 7,043 fans in attendance were about as loud as a Michigan crowd has been this year. Tarpley, Relford and Wade received prolonged standing ovations when leaving the game and a chant of "We want Rock" started with 8 minutes left when Leslie Rockymore had not yet seen any action. "I think the crowd got us psyched Shocker treatment 1-70 up," said Dan Pelekoudas. "We got th people who really wanted to be here." THE WOLVERINE victory means that Michigan will host a second-round contest Monday night at 8:00 p.m. The opponent will be the Marquette Warriors who beat Johnny Orr's Iowa State club, 73-53, last night at Ames. Tickets go on sale this morning. The Wolverines will be looking for their 20th win of the season Monday and Frieder says that a few more victories will help his team forget they missed an NCAA bid. "The more we win the more it'll ease the pain," he said. Smithson was trying to be realistic following the massacre. "You can't fight bears with switches," said the nine-year veteran. 'Maybe the "bears" should've been in the NCAAs.
