Call Laurie 764-1616, dY0321 Netmen crush K By SCOTT SALOWICH Aggressive tennis is back in town now that Michigan's men's tennis team has returned from Texas to sweep Kalamazoo College clean in its home opener. "I was very, very pleased with our performance," said coach Brian Eisner, "not just that we won 9-0, but with the way we competed." EISNER SAID HE had been concer- ned about his team's emotional level during the Texas trip but that playing at home helped raise the Wolverines' spirits. Team captain Ross Laser shared Eisner's opinion. "It feels good to be back," Laser said. "The team has a lot of enthusiasm and I feel real positive about our program and the guys on the team." LASER, playing number-two singles, defeated NCAA Division III All- American Todd Bottorff in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, and saidthe team's en- thusiasm has "made a real difference" in his game. There was no shortage of emotion in the number-four singlesbmatch either. Wolverine Rodd Schreiber beat Phil Harrington in a hotly-contested, hard- hitting match between two power players. Schreiber and Harrington ex- changed call disputes, verbal outbursts -and booming serves before the Michigan senior clinched the win, 6-2, 1- 6,6-3. I came out with a virus and felt kind of flat," said Schreiber, "and this frustrated me at the beginning. But when I use my temper positively, it works for me and that's what happened today." JIM SHARTON, Michigan's first singles player, overcame an early scare to defeat Kalamazoo's other division III All-American Tim Corwin. Corwin came out fast and took the first set 6-1 before Sharton got back on his game to take the next two, 6-2, 6-3. "I was a little tight today at the start and he just took it better," said Shar- ton. "He's a very good player, and if you don't get off to a good start against a very good player you're in trouble." Sophomore Hugh Kwok, playing number-six singles, and freshman Todd Cohen, at number five, impressed Eisner with their easy victories. Kwok displayed great quickness and agility in blowing out Chris Stokes, 6-0, 6-1, and Cohen also won handily, 6-2, 6-2. -College "I got off to a good start today and moved my feet well, said Cohen. "My confidence is moving up." Women netters at EMU When Michigan and Eastern Michigan tangle this afternoon in women's tennis, the pressure will be on both teams. The Wolverines are 2-6 and need a win to get their seven-match road trip started on a winning note. Eastern, 4-0 after a rain-soaked Florida trip, will feel added pressure from playing a Big Ten team. The match begins at 3 p.m. in Ypsilanti at Chippewa Valley Raquet Club. "WE ALWAYS look forward to playing Michigan," said EMU's fourth- year head coach, Claudie Wasik. "Michigan is always a tough team. I'm anxious to see how we respond to that pressure." At No. 1 singles, Michigan's Mary Mactaggart will go against longtime rival, -Kathy Horton. The two seniors have met twice in their college careers and a few times earlier in junior tennis competition. Mactaggart has won every time without yielding a set. "You can never be too confident with Kathy," Mactaggart said. "She's a good player." Horton is 3-1 this year and Mactaggart is 8-5. At No. 2 singles, the Wolverines' Paula Reichert (5-8) will meet un- defeated junior, Stacy Lightvoet, sister of former Wolverine, Stephanie Light- voet. Tomorrow's match against Calvin College has been cancelled and is being rescheduled. -PHIL NUSSEL IT'S THE CHOICE OF THE COACHES .f, JERRY ERICKSON'S Personal & Distinctive Hair Care 66$-$669 Appointments Available Open Mon.-Fri. 8:30-5:30 p.m. Wednesdays 8:30-8:00 p.m. Saturdays 8:30-3:00 p.m. 806 S. Goodridge leaves'M for Wake Forest job .7, By CHRIS GERBASI and1 BRAD MORGAN High hopes, fond memories and a few regrets will follow Michigan' track and cross country coach Fran- cie Goodridge when she leaves her duties here to take a similar position at Wake Forest in the fall. Goodridge and her husband, John, will coach the men's and women's cross country and distance relay teams for the Deacons. Goodridge will remain at Michigan through the outdoor season and Olympic training, but the coming move won't be an easy one. "I KNEW that my husband had wanted to get back to college coaching since last summer. It was a family decision, I wouldn't want to leave this program or this team, otherwise," she said. "I'll not only r be leaving the team, which is like a second family to me, but I'll also be leaving my home, because I was born and raised here." The Goodridge's are looking forward to taking over young, developing teams at Wake Forest, and -the Deacon's athletic director, Dr. Gene Hooks, is pleased to get the pair. "We feel great to get them and feel we were fortunate to land them," he said. Goodridge announced her decision to the team on the bus ride back from the Big Tens two weeks ago. "I think it was a shock to everyone," said sophomore Joyce Wilson. "She had just gotten the job a few years ago. It came all of a sud- den. She helped me and gave me confidence along with (assistant- coach) James Henry. She had a good relationship with everyone." rTve learned as much under her as I would have under anyone else," said Henry. "she's given me the oppor- tunity to use a lot of my ideals, but she also showed me a lot." i tit ~1'.
